gogol, are you really running this in diablo ? I did a dpkg -i as root and got a bunch of dependencies errors , and of course the app doesn't run.

Are you sure that's all you had to do ?...

edit: and it's a lot more than the two mentioned in those threads you've linked to in the first post :

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of fring:
fring depends on libcairomm-1.0-1 (>= 1.2.0); however:
Package libcairomm-1.0-1 is not installed.
fring depends on libglibmm-2.4-1c2a; however:
Package libglibmm-2.4-1c2a is not installed.
fring depends on libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a; however:
Package libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a is not installed.
fring depends on libsigc++-2.0-0c2a (>= 2.0.2); however:
Package libsigc++-2.0-0c2a is not installed.
dpkg: error processing fring (--install):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

Look at thist video, around 1:42

The call now will go through my handset, to our servers, to your gizmo sip account and from there to the landline

I don't see the problem: their server registers on your behalf and when they receive a call they'll forward it to the fring application on the tablet.

I use a sip provider that gives me a geographical number local to my relatives, so they can call me at a local call cost.
With the tablet I can use that account to call, but if I receive calls I cannot answer (the call will be interrupted as soon as I try to answer).
It's a pity since I can login with more than one client (my ata box at home and, say, the tablet when I'm out) and the server will ring them all at once.

I'm with zerojay.... I use internet call with my gizmo account..... almost no issues. For the odd time I require more functionality, I load up the gizmo client (acct balance, conf. call, etc)

...hmm, maybe I just have all that stuff installed already? I'm running from ext flash and it's pretty loaded up with stuff. Have you tried the normal N810.install route yet: http://www.fring.com/download/linux/ ?

I guess I don't see the problem in that. Why are you worried about them having your Gizmo account information? Gizmo has my Google Talk account information, Fring has my Gizmo account information, Gizmo/Fring/Google Talk/somebody! knows who I call on the phone? It doesn't worry me.
edit: And you appear to be correct they are bouncing your login info through their own servers, check this friendly diagram:

Maybe that's what improves call quality. I don't know.

I haven't tried none of these sip softwares for the reasons that there are too many hoops to jump through. And past google search, I am not jumping on all things google. I do have a skype account way before I had my N810 that I rarely used.

No, I hadn't, as you mentioned in your initial post that the .install on the web page didn't work for you, so I assumed dpkg was the only way.

The fun thing however, is that this morning an "update" for fring appeared in my app manager. This one installed without issues, and (after a reboot) seems to run fine.

I tried it at home over Wifi, and as you mentioned, feels quite fast and snappy for making calls.

As for using it on the road however, the point is unfortunately moot in my case, as the provider for my cheap 3G data plan has decided to filter out the fring servers, while the regular SIP calls still work (for now).

An update??! Really. I'll have to check into that! I'm glad one install route worked for you. For me, installing through the app manager just hung on downloading fring...so I tried it with apt...it was downloading about 100 bytes a second. Said est time 1.5 hours or something...repeated tries got me this so I tried to google a .deb. ...Anyhow, glad one way worked out for ya.
