Hey guys I know most of the people on here have linux for their OS system, but those who have windows i was curious if anyone was going to upgrade. Feel free to explain why or why not.

If I go back into Windows development I'll have to deal with Vista. Personally, the whole DRM fiasco and "protected data path" leave a poisonous taste in my mouth. Here's hoping I can find a less whorish way to generate income. No offense to my fellow pros^G^G^G^G coders, we all do what we have to. I'll be the last to throw stones.

I get it virtually free so I'll install it on one box to play with. And FYI I'm very new to linux and know very little about it. I've been a programmer of MS products for nearly 20 years now.

Funny, when I first loaded Linux up on a laptop about 6 years ago, it was at that time I suddenly realized how much Microsoft has really stifled innovation, development and the growth of the personal computer in general. Sure their have been changes, but when I look at my old lap top running Windows 95 and my current system running XP, while there clearly are some advances, I really wonder why after a decade I can't say "wow look how far M$ OS's have come..." Not very, thats for sure. So no, I won't be upgrading to Vista unless it comes with my next system.

Well, XP is basically Windows 2000 with a "new" GUI and a few services added by default.

And Windows 2000 is little more than Windows NT 3.5 with the Windows 95 GUI.

Come to think of it, Microsoft have done blissfully little in the past ten years, besides "innovating" their GUIs. (and even the Windows 95 GUI was stolen from IBM's OS/2 Warp -- now there was an operating system!)

My desktops run Linux since 1998. In my job I currently have to develop something on the Windows platform but I found that my old Win2000 is good enough for that task. So, no XP here, and most likely no Vista in the near future. Only a Win2000 I regularly curse about.

For me, Windows is a secondary OS, kept on only one machine and used to run some applications unavailable on Linux - no computer here ever got a upgrade to the Windows version it shipped with.

I'll eventually end up with Vista around 2009 as the consequence of the next unavoidable hardware upgrade, just like I got XP in 2005 - but if somebody should happen to offer a cheaper box with Win2k or XP included at that time, Vista won't happen here until the next decade...

I selected "Yes, but when the price goes down" as I plan to wait until I can find a reasonably powerful refurbished machine with Vista on TigerDirect. Will probably have to wait quite a while but my current machines running XP are fine for the time being - perhaps until SP1 for Vista is released.

I have a MAC. OS X. I am happy.

I'm grabbing Kubuntu (that's Ubuntu with a KDE UI) right now to give it a run. Because I only run Windows about 20% of the time, I have no intention of paying the exorbitant MS tax for the uncrippled version (the most expensive) of Vista. I will stay with XP unless forced to do so by some "gotta have" new game. I only use WinXP for gamig and sometimes for a FLAC/OGG/MP3 program which rips directly from a digital CD and avoids the soundcard.
For those who are excited about Vista, dualboot. I have a very experianced friend in Lodon who has some hickups going on with Vista drivers and suggested that he install XP and Vista so he has the stable XP to work with. He can then get fixes for Vista as they become available.
