This only says something about AT&T, not about the iPhone.
iPhone does have MMS. I received MMS from iPhone users starting this summer. And I have screenshots of how my own MMS are displayed on the dark side. So yes, it works.
The 3rd party app (requires jailbreaking) was already available since last year or even before that: SwirlyMMS. I think it was one of the first few native iphone apps made available in the jailbreaking scene.
