Just deleted my import of Windows Streets and Trips, and took a look at the mapping programs that are available on this site.

Anybody venture what is the concensus best one? I really can't justify paying a monthly fee for Wayfinder, as I don't travel that much, but a good freebie would be nice.

I would think Maemo Mapper would be the most popular. It also might be the most full featured. It is what I use and I like it for its wide variety of map choices: from satellite & aeral maps to traditional street maps, to topo maps.

I personally have not tried all the lesser known mapping programs on my N810. So anyone that has, what specific features do they offer, especially when compared to MM?

I also use Maemo Mapper. There is just one thing I dislike about routing a trip. When you search for the address that you what to route to, it must go "online" to get the routing information. If you don't have a WiFi connection you must be teathered to your phone. You can, however, make and save routes at home before you travel.

Yes, this is annoying, especially if you want to change your route mid-trip. I guess this is a result of the trip routing being done from a free Internet site somewhere and not on the NIT itself. The NIT then just imports the route information when it is sent. I do wish it would then download the reverse route at the same time too (maybe it will, but I don't know how?)

Of course you also have to make sure you have maps downloaded along the route you are going on before the trip too, unless you previously downloaded them.

Another gripe with MM is that it is not very finger friendly. Other touch screen GPS units popup a large, easy to touch menu, with MM you get a small Maemo-style pull-down that is even hard with a stylus, as I often navigate it with the "D" pad instead for more predictable results.

Still I consider MM one of the "Killer Apps" for the NIT

For those who are interested, there is a script out there that will allow you to download maps for Maemo Mapper on your PC without having to use the tablet. I don't immediately have the link, but it should be easy enough to find. Just search for "getmaps".
