Today, I tried to install an application from the new Applications Catalog . I went for Mplayer (http://test.maemo.org/applications/product/mplayer/), mainly because the version listed in the Catalog was different from the one I tried before on NaB00 (and which didn't work all that well). I figured I couldn't be off worse anyhow. Yeah...

Funnily enough, hitting on the "install now" arrow resulted in Application Manager refusing to install Mplayer because apparently it was incompatible with my software. So, eother my N800 runs ITOS2008, or the Applications Catalog isn't all that it promises.

Wait! there's a third possibility: Application Manager might be buggy. But no, verily such a thing cannot be...

I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing that the same thing will happen with Maemo Mapper. Unfortunately, there doesn't yet seem to be a way to specify multiple .install files in the new test.maemo.org applications framework. So, an application that is compatible with both OS 2006 and OS 2007 will only be able to choose one .install file (either the OS 2006 one, or the OS 2007 one). Since I target the 770, I choose the OS 2006 .install file, even though Maemo Mapper works on OS 2007, too.

It looks like Ferenc has acknowledged that the limitation exists, and he says that they are working on a solution.

I installed mplayer manually on my n800 and was also disappointed for entirely different reasons-- this version is only for the 770! The application manager is smarter than the user in this case

I tried installing maemo-mapper for the n800 (one of the 12 listed IT2007 applications) and it failed for me as well. ("Application package is incompatible with current software.")

same error message.

installed mplayer manually and that seems rather buggy too - once a file starts playing there seems no way to stop it at all, the only way being a reboot - anyone else get this?

(btw - maybe a stupid question, but how come mplayer plays a wide range of files whilst the inbuilt media player lacks the codecs? is it a cost issue or something else? I really don't understand if it is anything other thana legal/licensing thing - there shold really be no "need" for mplayer at all!)

No, there shouldn't. Nokia should have used Mplayer as the media player to begin with.

Then again, there are so many Open Source applications that Nokia should have used instead of the crappy homebrew code they slapped onto the IT series.

I installed Mplayer on my 770 and didn't like it at all. To each his own though.

Texrat: that's just a case of the GUI though.

Karel: I *believe* the Media Player is based on Helix Player, and the playback framework is - of course, gstreamer. The biggest reason is probably licencing, followed by no-one with ssvb's skillset for optimising mplayer.

All the more reason we need that elusive "segmented distribution installation" (the one where the user chooses what's going in his flash image and what not) as soon as possible.

And we need to get enough money together to get Sean Luke working on a new GUI for the N800!
