The standard ringtone for Maemo Skype is REALLY annoying, and not even very audible. I have found the location of the ringtone wav files, but I can't copy any files into that folder. How do I get access?

Please note: If your answer is "become root," you are going to have to tell me what that means and how to do it.

Hi, check the wiki page for complete info but the important part is:
rootsh

Note: As rootsh is the simplest option, and does not require a desktop computer or running additional services, it is the recommended method for gaining root access.

rootsh is available in Extras, and can be installed from the Application manager if you have Extras enabled.

Then, from the shell, run sudo gainroot (or root for short). This will give you a root shell.
Hope it helps, if not mention what is not clear so it can be improved.

I've installed rootsh, and the app manager says its installed, but it doesn't appear on the extras list. Or ANY app list. Or on the available apps list in Personal Menu. If it really is installed, I can't find it. And yes, I rebooted.

I also installed OpenSSH, and it did the same thing. It's just not there. Even if these utilities worked, I don't know what you mean by "from the shell."

Check the last sentence of my previously quoted message..

Then, from the shell, run sudo gainroot (or root for short). This will give you a root shell.
Should it be replaced with something like:
Then, open XTerm and type "sudo gainroot" (or "root" for short) and press return. This will give you a root shell.
or it was just missed?

Open the X Terminal application. That gives you a command line and you are "in the shell". Then just type the commands in and don't forget to hit return.

THAT makes sense.

Even though rootsh isn't on my apps list, it's evidently working. I was able to use XTerm to get root access. But I'm STILL getting "access denied" errors when I try to copy files into the Skype sounds folder.
