If anyone else is using the Archos AV-400 series to record TV (works with DVDs also) I have found a combination of settings that works pretty well for me for playing back on the N800.

On the Archos Av-400
In settings for recording - Resolution: LCD, Bitrate: 1500 kbps, Sampling: 48kHz and boost volume to near maximum.

Using VirtualDub v.1.6.17 (freeware)
With "Video" dropdown set "DirectStream" instead of processing.
With "Audio" dropdown set:
- "Full compression mode" instead of 'Direct Stream'
- In "Compression" set to 'MPEG Layer-3' then choose "56 kBits/s, 24,000 Hz, Stereo"
- In "Volume" set to approx 140%
- Then from "File" dropdown select "Save as .AVI" and set a new file name.

Tried a number (about 10) half-hour TV shows. Using Archos I edited out all the commercials taking a 30 minute show down to just over 20 minutes. Archos created files about 280 MB and after conversion with VirtualDub files were about 225 MB

I am quite pleased with the results, they play quite acceptably on the N800 (and also on the Archos and Palm Tungsten T3). The file sizes are larger than I'd hoped but at least they play without problems on the N800. I tried many programs and many sets of settings/parameters before arriving at the steps above which work very well for every file I've converted.

I hope this helps any other N800/Archos AV-400 users.

I have an Archos PMA430, but I don't use it to record from TV (too much hassle). I do use Pocket DivXEncoder to convert pvr-recorded files. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a setting for the latter that will produce a N800-compatible file.

The SUPER © encoder, however, does produce files that play back on the N800; it's just that, compared to my PMA430 (even with its ancient 320x240 screen), playback on the N800 is truly sad.

BTW, if you use "direct stream" for video, you shouldn't expect any video compression at all. The only compression you'll get is for the audio, so it's actually quite normal that there's little difference in file size. Personally, I'd set the audio quality at least at 96 kbps and try some video compression, or at least get the bitrate down to below 500 (I didn't even think the stock N800 could play video at that bitrate at 320x240, which IIRC is the screen resolution of the AV400 as well).

I appreciate your comments about how you would improve my settings. The reason why I posted these settings is that they are the ONLY settings I've found after hours of experiments, trials, and errors, that will 100% of the time make .AVI files that will play satisfactorily on my N800.

As you said, you are not happy with the results you've been getting. With my settings I am quite happy with the results on my N800.

I've tried higher bitrates and lower bitrates, separately for audio and video. What I've finally settled on, although producing files that are bigger than I'd prefer, DO WORK and work 100% of the time!

I haven't given up in my search to find a way of getting smaller files but the priority is that they will actually play on the N800

I'm going to try this. I have recorded a few VCR tapes to my PMA, with similar (over 1,000 kbps) bitrates. I've never even considered trying them on the N800, because of what I read here (https://maemo.org/maemowiki/VideoEncoding) but who knows...
