After the changing of the look of this forum, a lot of programmers don't update their programs anymore, eg, Canola. Of course, who wants to come here and needs to reseach to see what other people have to say about their programs. Just a thought, I know some people may not agree.
Sorry, are you trying to correlate the change of theme with the slowing down of Canola development? Even though one of the INdT guys and Canola designers designed the maemo.org theme?
Personally I would love to see a stand alone Mer web site which would contain support forums for all of the devices likely to use it, e.g. SmartQ 5, SmartQ 7, N770, N800, N810.
Bear in mind, too, the plethora of new MIDs that are being announced so new support forums will continue to be added. And all that of course will produce the aforementioned ‘traffic’ flow.
So why not make the separation now in anticipation of what is to come?
Not that it matters but ITT and Maemo Org lost interest for me the day Maemo development ended for the N800. So it jars to find that I still have to keep coming back for Mer updates.
I prefer my divorces to be on a clean break basis.
@Rebski
Mer is a part of Maemo and we are currently very happy with http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer and our presence here.
Certainly quite pleased that typing Mer into Google gives that page as the 2nd hit
@Geneven, hordeman aswell
If the community does some analysis and can show that Mer traffic warrants it then by all means ask the admins here for some breakout - but be aware that going to sit out on your own too soon can make you lonely
If the community feels that Mer is something that it wants to back more then there may be some merit to highlighting it more. I'm concerned about the expectations though. We're certainly not 'done' yet and if people try it and don't like it then it may not be obvious that there's a lot of work left to do. OTOH without some more help we're never going to get there...
I suspect that as the last parts of Fremantle code get released and into Mer and we find a way around the desktop 3D issues then Mer will breathe some more life into our trusty N8x0/770s - at that point I hope that we will see a real boost in user traffic and not just us dedicated hackers.
Nb the http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer/Status pages are where I'd like to see more and clearer device support. (Note to self, must add the Marvell Avengers-A)
I personally hate wading through hundreds of posts to manually distil information out - I'd far rather people put a bit of effort into contributing to the content around a project than just talking about it. Personal view though.
Whilst I'm here, we should also apologise for the last 0.16 cycle; not our finest period.
FYI Carsten has moved country, gotten married and moved jobs; I've been focusing on infrastructure (OBS especially) and personal work; we're also aware that a lot of the things we could work on run the risk of being invalidated as more Fremantle opens up so we've been a bit tentative in what we've done. I know... don't give us excuses... give us bling!
@switchfiend
I've set up an area and imported a *lot* of Fremantle Extras applications but I've not had time to install and review them; ISTR someone volunteered to do that but I don't recall who - needless to say it hasn't happened.
They're not in the app-manager though... not sure why. It's on the list
It's certainly a great way for non-coders to help out in Mer though. Constructive testing and tracking quality is crucial to our success.
I don't think it's necessary for me to outline a bunch of topics for admins to realize that Mer needs its own section. Simply look at the messages mentioning Mer in this section to get an idea of what is being discussed. Note that many discussions cover many topics in addition to that indicated in their headers.
And, exactly what does anyone think tablet users are going to do with their current tablets in the future, run Android?
There are only two viable options, as far as I can see: Mer and Diablo. Diablo has many sections, Mer has part of one section.
It doesn't make any sense. My appeal is not so much based on numbers, but on logic.
I suspect that the only reason there is any resistence to the idea of giving Mer the section it obviously deserves is that the powers that dominate this site want to hype the N900 right now and don't want distractions.
I'm all for hyping the N900, but continuing advancement of the tablets we all own is also important. Mer is potentially wonderful; it would cost nothing to give it its own section.

Stop trolling.

As lbt says above - one of the Mer admins - moving stuff out to its own section too soon can fragment, set expectations of completion etc.
Instead of coming up with emotive rubbish, how about you do some analysis of numbers?
How many Mer-related threads are there in Alternatives?
How many non-Mer threads are there in Alternatives?
Jeez, talking about making finding info on Mer hard work.
Tell you what let's just forget it. This inconvenience really isn't worth it.
The only tag that I shall check on now is 'Android'. Andorid based MIDs are being announced almost daily and will do me fine. So I shall leave Mer to its own devices (that wasn't intended to be a pun but it fits quite well) and wish it well.
At some future date a post somewhere will encourage me to come back.
In the meantime, I really don't intend to spend my life having to deal with the machinations of yet another dumb, self serving, power retaining bureaucracy.
