It seems we could fit a lot more information in the status bar if we could combine the brightness and volume sliders into one widget with both the sliders in the dropdown. Split the meter down the middle and have the left side as brightness and the right as volume. We might be able to fit the Wifi widget into it, too, and have that data somewhere else on the widget.

I don't have the skills, knowledge, or time to do this, but maybe somewhere out there with more ability and freetime could slap something together.

Any thoughts?

I think combining the volume/brightness indicators would be worthwhile. My tray is constantly overflowing with too many icons.

Statusbar Disco Applet
is registered at garage.....
nothing out yet though-

...The Statusbar Disco Applet is a small applet, that is intended to duplicate the functionality of the Brightness- and the Volume-Applet, but combine them into a single applet to save screen estate. The name of course comes from Disco = Light + Sound :-)

I say an option to remove the whole thing, put a small applet on left side that makes the whole thing slide out when you need it.

I guess the question is whether to advance the hildon environment with enhancements (like a universal startmenu applet or the slideout menu idea above) or whether to completely reinvent the 770/n800 gui altogether..

This weekend I can't wait to try out your extraordinary hack of hacks, penguinbait~ Thanks for opening a new horizon in mobile linux!!

p.s. can you control volume or screen brightness within wm?
I'm sure it is possible....

The Hildon UI doesn't seem to allow overlapping windows.. but I would be all for status/startmenu applets that could be set up to slide away and overlap another window just when in use.
