Andrew,

It appears you're one of the ROX People (well, that's what I get from your website anyway). Would it be possible -- and feasible! -- , now that Penguinbait rejoyced the world with his Windowmaker hack, to get a Rox build for the 770/N800?

IIRC, ROX relies on GTK, so that might ease things a bit.

Oh, and before you ask: I'd like to help, but not in the coming month (packing and moving to Thailand).

Getting ROX running in, say, WindowMaker or other lightweight window manager should be a piece of cake.

Although, I've not looked at the ROX code for a couple of years now, I still keep an eye on the mailing list.

ROX for Hildon, with the use of Matchbox/full-screen windows, wouldn't be much use, I'd've thought.

Cheers,

Andrew

Never heard of ROX before, but just took a look at it. The most important feature I would think to being able to have the tablets be much more linux system like, is a right click.. maybe button plus stylus tap = right click.. I say knowing nothing about programing :-)

Kudos to penguinbait, this looks like a fantastic and interesting hack.

But... could you or someone else please package it up properly? As well as making it much easier for everyone to try out, this would also have the advantage that you'd know exactly what the install scripts and removal scripts are doing, and wouldn't have to deal with reports where people might have followed your instructions slightly wrongly.

I understand your concern. I would love to see someone package this up into a deb and send it out. Better yet I would love to see some developers take over and run with the idea.

That being said, I have no intenetions anytime soon to package this into a deb. I love to play and hack, and I am happy to share. I always include instructions that any unix savy person can understand and follow. I try to provide instructions for installing anything I think is cool, that way others can share in the fun. (some others at ITT might start doing the same, it helps the community grow) Even if you do not have software to contribute, a nicely detailed set of insctructions for any process is also a contribution. I especially want people who don't know much about unix to jump in and learn a little and be able to use the cool things they see here.

Again you can not please everyone, and I am not even trying. This community is very helpful and resourcefull. If you get stuck installing this, just use the forum, and ask for help. As more people use the forum and problems are discovered they can be fixed. I did this because it was fun, and cool, and usefull. Not for money or credit, I am happy to fix problems, but the community needs to step up and pitch in as they always do. Most of the people who are creating / porting software for tablets, put a lot of time and effort with little to no reward except personal satisfation, and props... Lets face it most of us have real jobs and familys, and me personally, my wife would like to break my nokia in half

"Thats all you do is play with that damn thing" (love you too dear)

So what does that mean to non unix savy people. It means you will have to wait until a package comes out that you feel comfortable with before you install.

Did you ever install IE4 BETA, that will teach you.

Completely agree with everything you have said. I didn't mean to imply any kind of obligation in my post, so sorry if it may have come across in that way.

I still hope someone who feels fluent in packaging will step in to help here... I wish I had the time and fluency to do it myself.

I was not trying to come down on you, just explaining my position. I really want to see some developers look at what I did and develop a real window manager, in a package.

Great work penguinbait - this is the dog's bollocks!

I can report that it works on a 770 as shown by the attached screenshot.

Only issue was needing to install the libsm6 package to get the xterm to work.

The dock application wmwifi is giving me an "can't parse color rgb:8e/96/8a" error at the moment.

Switching between Hildon and WM works perfectly.

Hope to play more with it tomorrow.

Eggsy, great news, 770 users will be very happy. Perhaps you can tar up additional lib for other 770 users. Let me know and I can update my tarball also.

PS:

I just love the colorful speech from across the pond... "dogs bollocks"

Cheers, as you all say!!!

Danm wankers, hehe , no offense intended
