Just got my N810 a few weeks ago and one tool I'm looking to run on it is a network monitoring tool.
I have looked at iptraf and zenmap (nmap) but neither of them seem to do what I am after - which is really rather simple; I think:

When connected to a network show:
- IP adresses of connected devices,
- Name of devices

(name seems to be the hard part to get, could not get iptraf to show that)

And, nice to have:
- transfer speed/usage
- url connected to

Possible?

IF there is no tool for this on maemo is there an online, no-download tool that can do the same?

Can the n810 wireless hardware go into 'promiscuous mode'? Even if it can, will it see everything passing through the wireless access point it is connected to?

I don't think the n810 is the right tool for that job. You could scan individual machines I guess, but not monitor traffic.

Afterthought....how about a USB wired-network interface? Then you could plug into a router and use tcpdump/wireshark...when/if they're ported

iptraf, running it on N810 right now, have a configuration option to go into promiscuous mode and it actually seems to capture a whole deal.

i won't be able to test it out with multiple devices on the same netowrk until later tonight so we'll se how it handles that.

I'll be very interested to read your results, slartibart. Right now I would suspect that you're just seeing your own traffic.

Your n810 connected via WiFi....a PC wired to the same router, browsing the web....can the n810 see the PC's http traffic? I will be surprised if it does.

Of course, with a wired USB connection from your n810 to the same router, everything should work fine.

Something I don't know about....what about setting your n810 to promiscuous ad-hoc mode? Can that be done? I wonder if that would sniff all wireless RF traffic within range? Barring WEP etc, of course...

I'll post what I see tonight (unless someone who have prior experience with N810-based LAN-traffic monitoring - using iptraf or other app - can post their findings).

looks rather promising: http://www.unix-tutorials.com/go.php?id=4003

iptraf, tcpdump etc cannot magically go out onto a network and hoover up packets....when a network interface is put in 'promiscuous' mode it passes every packet that hits it up the network stack, rather than ignoring packets that don't match its hardware address.

I'm still very curious to read what your N810 experiment shows

ok, was able to try it out now. had the n810 and a pc connected to the same LAN...bad news..could only see myself when running eiither iptraf or zenmap from my n810...

guess you cant see other IP addresses and activities from the N810 than your own- bummer-
