pelago: I remember checking, and I am almost certain even vertical dragging is disabled.
Interesting. Maybe they thought that vertical dragging might do something on the desktop, or have plans for it to do so.
If we ever get a portrait mode desktop, and if switching between portrait mode desktops is done with a vertical drag rather than a horizontal drag (personally I think I would prefer a horizontal drag with a potential portrait mode desktop), maybe that's why they decided to disable vertical dragging on widgets.
I always have my phone mounted in a car kit with the display on, so I am trying to think of some useful widgets to have running while driving.
I was thinking a "Shazam" widget would be good - allow you to identify the song being played on the radio, as these days I find the stations are hopeless at back announcing the tracks.
Not sure if this is more of an app than a widget. Also, I don't know how a developer could tap into the song database ???
Perhaps a GPS speedo widget might be interesting - show your speed as calculated by the GPS - I suspect this would be more accurate than my car speedo. Maybe also show average speed, distance travelled or distance to home/gps co-ords (as the crow flies - not using maps).
What about a Widget that shows the Traffic updates info that newer GPS system use ?
More an app than a widget:
As pictures taken by the N900 are geotagged - perform a search for pictures based on a rectangle area defined by GPS positions.
