Hope I'm in the right place to make a suggestion?

Many years ago I had a Treo600 (Yeah, a lot of years!). Wonderful piece of kit, my first converged device and a life-changer.

One of the things it did I have never seen on any device since: it was created by one of the Nice People at mytreo.net.

It was simply this: I had a set of profiles (as you do) one for work, one for home, and one for overnight. The treo didn't have anything clever like light detection, so they included the screen brightness, and colours chosen for indoors, or the middle of the night (when you don't want to get retina burn if you suddenly decide to check your phone at 2am). Nothing unusual there.

But here's the clever bit: I never changed the profiles. The treo did it for me automatically, going to bed at 10pm, waking up to daytime at 6am, and switching to work at 9am Monday to Friday.

I'm only guessing that it would be fairly simple for something as complex as maemo to integrate profiles and clock... or am I waaay off base here?

Any clever person up for this one?

this could be broadened so one could set a gsm ring profile also plus theme, backgrounds,...

os2008 has an applet to change screen brightness so that shouldn't be a problem.

Cron jobs with a nice frontend UI to set profiles from the cmd line

I had this on my N95 as an addon app. Can't live without it. And I'm guessing it'll be a lot easier to do on the N900 if it allows cmd line profile changes.

Exactly - that's what it did on the treo: the screen colour profile, the background, the ringtones (and which were active or silent) - all the stuff you put in the 'profiles' bit of your phone so it doesn't ring during that vital meeting.

(I'd already worked out that I want to set up the 4 screens as 'work', 'leisure', 'connectivity' and 'misc'.

Look up Attila77's project called Shepherd. The features and triggers you requested are but a subset of the utility he's drawn up, so it's definitely doable

The N900 has a light sensor, so you might not even need such a solution as screen brightness gets adjusted automatically.
