Now that we have 300 people with a pre-production N900 in their hands, not to mention numerous other people coming out of the woodwork now their NDA has expired, can we have an update on the screen being susceptible to scratches problem as mentioned in the MySymbian (p)review ?

Anyone else noticing the same issue ?

Will a Screen Protector be almost mandatory ?

Notice that only one preview has come out complaining of scratching issues. Nobody else has mentioned anything. Extrapolate from that what you wil.

Well, it's not like all the reviewers attempt to scratch it. The author of the MySymbian preview only scratched it because of having sand grains or something in his pocket. His N900 didn't come with any protected film, other review devices may have them.

Anyway, what we need is someone/reviewer to "stress test" the screen like how they did with the N97: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB1GxqRFKzw

I've had my N900 in my pocket for almost a month straight. Not a single scratch.. but I also don't do anything stupid like put my keys in there with it.

I successfully polish out scratches on the screen of my N82 with a paste of 0.3µm Aluminium Oxide / distilled water and a cotton wool bud. Can you still do this on a touch screen device, how thick is the top layer?

I do such stupid things. That's why I have revived the pouch that came with my G1 and use it for the N900 now. It fits perfectly. Obviously no scratches so far, even with keys in the same pocket.

I did that with my prototype, and didn't manage to make any scratches appear. That is not to say that final devices can't be more susceptible (though I doubt it), or that particularly unfortunate encounters with sand grains can't still lead to scratches.

being able to do just that (or better: not having to think about this for a single moment) is what i expect from portable consumer electronics devices in general and phones in particular. i wouldn't consider it "stupid" at all.
