Note that they are treating it as critical though. I'm still hopeful, especially since 3 seem to be the only operator that doesn't forbid IM/VoIP and I really don't want to have to remember switching off presence every time before I connect...

Chris are you based in the UK?

Please can any UK T-Mobile users that have been on the web'n'walk package let us know their experiences with how strictly they enforce these ridiculous restrictions (posted on the previous page by Martin Atkins) on these policies.

Anyone who has found that VoIP is not allowed on their package, does this mean that you simply can't uses things like Skype or do you just pay extortionate data charges to use it?

Really gutted to read that exert from their small print (although glad someone noticed and posted it now!), if people are finding these rules are enforced I may have to cancel my pre-order and look for another option.

They have three tiers of Web'n'Walk package. The lowest tier does not permit* tethering or streamed media. The second allows streamed media and tethering but no VOIP applications, the third allows anything (including VOIP).

    * The restrictions are in place in the Ts &Cs and form part of your contract. I have no idea what (if any) technical blocks or monitoring is in place to enforce it.

Hi Jaark, thanks for your reply.

I had found this information on their "fair" usage policy: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/

But it seems that all three of the mobile internet packes outlined there (Flext,
Combi & U-Fix) "do not permit use of this service to provide modem access for a computer or for peer to peer file sharing, internet phone calls or instant messaging."

Is this what you where referring to or was it something else? I remember hearing that they have higher max GB/month plans, is that what you were talking about?

I am based in the UK, as I mentioned they cast a blind eye, and havent charged me extra for anything. If you do go over limits/take this piss Im sure they would do something (restrict speed etc) but I havent been subjected to this ever.

Flext, Combi & U-Fix can include basic webnwalk, you can upgrade or downgrade to Plus or Max on a monthly basis.

Yup, that's exactly what I was meaning. For clarification, WnW Plus allows streamed media, IM and tethering. WnW Max allows pretty much anything including VoIP. Plus and Max also have a higher 'fair use' threshold too.

I'm pretty sure they say that if you go over the fair use threshold, they will restrict your speed for the rest of the month - again, this is based on what they say in their Ts&Cs - I'm not aware of anyone who has been subjected to the limits.

At the end of the day, WnW Plus does everything I need & is only just over a tenner a month extra on my contract - worth the money IMO.

FYI, I spoke to someone at T-Mobile about the speed restriction.
This theoretically applies, but apparently there is no way of doing this on phones - it is done apparently on the usb dongle thingi's.

He also said if you go over significantly they will alert you, and I assume things will escalate from there.
But if you are using it that much you should be on their top tier anyway. It seems like it is real "fair use" which is why I opted for it over the other providers.

That makes no sense - the technology and network in use is/should be pretty much identical.
I've learned to take what T-Mo CS reps state with a pinch of salt. I had problems connecting to the data service when I joined and the CS rep I spoke to insisted that 3G did not carry data, only GPRS did that.

Yup, from what I can see it is head and shoulders above everyone else's offerings, except - maybe - Three, but their website is so vague about what they provide I can't tell.
