What a lousy outfit the once great Nokia has become. Even motorola is showing signs of life - the dext was announced after n900 yet its already in the shops. What in the world happened to Nokia? What has become of it ?.
Nokia has multiple devices, not a single device. Apple can never outsell Nokia when Nokia has a portfolio of devices to Apple's one. Sort of like expecting the Bugatti Veyron to outsell Chevrolet. Too much of the mass market, and one device will never satisfy them all. Apple has Blackberry and WinMo to contend with, and numbers say they're formidable opponents. Let's see how Apple handles that before you give them Nokia's crown, which they've held half this decade. You have to beat the champ to be the champ.

Have you ever used Linux on a desktop, preferably Ubuntu or Mint? If you had, that perception would change. This is no smartphone. I'm considered a smartphone expert by many all over the world, and smartphones are my specialty and the center of my life, so please trust and believe me.

Android is a smartphone OS. Maemo is a desktop OS in its 4th or 5th version, and only now gracing smartphones. It could easily power a laptop with a touchscreen, with no loss in performance from your typical desktop. You may need a primer in Linux, as I got thanks to the guys here, and then you'll get it.

The N900 lets you leave the laptop in the car most of the time. Simple as that. You may love the N900, but your perception and expectations aren't fitting the N900's capabilities. Its possible to buy too much device, and you sound like a candidate.
    *sigh*

Man this post really irritates me. This is the second time you've replied to me out of context, assumed I'm somehow uninformed and in need of your self-proclaimed "expert" tutelage.

Read my main post in this thread--the thread that rm42 was actually replying to. Please direct your attention to the last sentence, where I explain that I've been a Linux enthusiast for nearly a decade. In case that isn't clear enough, allow me to explain. Various forms of Linux (currently Ubuntu 10.04) have been on my desktop for years. Not just my primary OS, but my only OS.

I know what Maemo 5 is and I love it. I simply disagree that N900 should be called a "mobile computer". All smart-phones are mobile computers IMO. Again, if you actually read my post before mounting your high-horse, you'd see that there are many factors which lead me to believe that Droid is likely to be better for me.

Edit: And I thought Droid was just Sholes renamed?
i believe droid is verizons moniker for it, the gsm variant will have another name

    From finance.yahoo.com

    Nokia's market cap: 49.79 Billion
    Apple market cap: 170.08 Billion

Who's the champ? Apple could buy Nokia if they really wanted to

Depends on who owns Nokia's shares. It could be like Microsoft's attempt to buy Nintendo, and Nintendo going "haha, no" despite Microsoft having its vast amounts of money since Nintendo owns at least 51% of their own shares as a company and their employees own part of that other 49% along with any publically traded stock.

And not to mention bugelrex, your taking a company that makes PCs, media players, and iPhone vs. a company that works primarily in cell phones. Champ would = Nokia for the fact that on the cell phone market Nokia dominates Apple. If it's overall then it would be Apple. But in that case if you were going with that logic then Microsoft > Nokia if Microsoft released their "Pink" phone.

Wow. I'm no tutor, just giving my opinion. I agree with the other guy. Nothing wrong with that, Jay. Don't take my opinion so personally. We all have one, and its no crime. But I like your idea that all smartphones are mobile computers, and agree with that, just I think Maemo is the closest to fulfilling expectations of a mobile computer as most people know them, something most smartphones have only attempted.

So I won't call the N95 a mobile computer anymore, as I have in the past. Its the pinnacle of smartphones, and the N900 ushers in the new era, where a pocketable computer is finally more than a dream.

Now take it easy, and just realize I'm in love with this stuff. I know I'm everywhere, in every thread. All of that needless dissing of me wasn't necessary. I'm being polite, and I don't have to be. It'd be nice to be treated likewise. Not all advice is good advice. If it doesn't help you, just ignore it.

Market cap is based on stock price and cash, neither of which are real guages of value. As Palm benefitted from Nokia merger rumors to increase its value, so too do others. Let Steve Jobs die, and Apple stock will fall, even though its devices may be selling well at brisk profits. In the case of the phone market and mobile communications and services, Nokia IS BOSS.

I like to think Apple learned from the last time Steve Jobs left the company and their whole company almost fell apart. That they now have understudies that learn from Jobs.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like Apple (while I admire some of their usability designs I hate their draconian control and marketing department) but it's nice to have them as a competitor to keep others on their toes.

Before we start the mess I think derails most good threads here, let's cool our tones and show each other more respect. We're all members of the same community, and don't want people coming here thinking we're a group of grumps and rude dudes. We can all be men or women, and not act like children. If I can chill and keep my composure, anyone can.
