First off, great writeup! However, I have to disagree with the above point. Google has shown not only great innovation, but also marvelous contributions to the OSS community. These come in the form of:

- Google wave
- Chromium
- V8
- O3D
- Summer of Code
- Android (carriers can close bits, but it is oss)
- Books (yes, the kind you read, the worlds largest library?)
- Gears
- etc

Plus they contribute to industry driving oss projects like Hadoop and its tools (yahoo is by far the primary contributer).

Now, I'm sure there are many motivations for improving the bottom line, but google has been a very visible proponent of oss. This is good as they're helping to set the trend, and because of their size, this is an influence that we all feel.

Jay, I like The .Org, and I'm not the only one who says it. Embrace it, buddy. It's not a mean remark, just some folks way of not saying 4 syllables all of the time.

I see Google as not really working for the good of OSS, just giving tools to support their monopolization of certain parts of the web, services, and reading in general. I like Google, but I see their intent, as do others, and that's the biggest knock on them. They have too much power, and are intent on getting more. Not the usual spirit of an OSS entity.

And I learned the mobile game from those very 15-19 year old hackers and programmers from China, Russia, India, and Bangladesh. Never underestimate another's knowledge. They grew up not ever being without the tools we've watched being developed, and are far more advanced than the kids of my generation.

Well, I can appreciate the intuition of google being a profit-driven company first, but this is hardly a characteristic isolated to google. I suspect that even parts of Nokia has ulterior motives as well despite their recent embrace of oss.

Considering that google is a web company, it follows that they are developing web related software, just as nokia is developing handset related software. The web platform is highly significant, and google pushing standards and open solutions demonstrates friendliness towards oss, and is extremely important to future development.

If a tool is released as part of a standard and is libre, it can hardly be considered a driver for monopoly.

  • I have to write for a foreign enviroment (I write my Maemo apps on Ubuntu and have stuff to handle hildonization automatically so I never use scratchbox)

I think a big win overall would be for the Cannonical port of Android to a full Linux system to be finished and then to get that to work on the Maemo 5.
Another possibly win looking the other way would be for the Java bindings for QT to be ported to Android and the JVM gets ported to Maemo 5.

Either way would allow for a lot for cross-pollination of apps.
Another con you might add to that list is because everything has to run from Java, it's slower in multi-tasking compared to Maemo. But yes I do agree it would be nice if we could run Android apps from Maemo. Best of both worlds.

Good points, Capt'n Corrupt. I'm at odds with Google, but know right now, they provide a good service, and do wonders for the web today. I'm not a Google or Microsoft hater. I think Windows 95 was the best OS/software of all time.

Ack! Even as an ooold programmer of MS tools and systems I have to give Linux (core concept) that distinction. Besides, XP > Win 95.

Jay's such an expert.

lcuk, I've heard members don't like the .org, so I've officially banished it from my private and public conversations as of this morning. I've passed it along to the rest of the guys, too.

I revere Win95 for the effect it had on web usage and computing among the masses. Other than that, it sucked. But its the most influential piece of software since DOS for my generation, IMO. Linux kernel is top 3, though. I put BASIC at 2nd, because it was my introduction to programming on my TRS-80 as a ten year old. Its a personal choice. Your own may vary.
