Ok, after months of trying ssh to no avail, ssh would still hang after entering my password from a computer to the N800 (in linux and windows, using ssh, winscp & putty). I tried running ssh from my N800 to my account at maemobox (thanks andrewfblack!) and after entering the password, it would hang. after that I KNEW it was an N800 OpenSSH issue as ssh on Ubuntu Hardy connects to that host fine.

lbt pointed me to the -vvv switch which helped me a lot. I googled the last error message which I saw and found:

Applied that fix to the current maemo openssh version and recompiled and it works!

You can find my debs (grab the ones that begin with openssh) and patched packet.c here:

Is it possible to repost somewhere this build, I'm having the same problem with my N810, I've tried several openssh builds, but all of them just hang after the login.

Yes please, me too- I cannot ssh to or from my N800, and I have a Netgear router. Please could you re-post the patched openssh?

Another way around it is to install netcat (from the tools repository) and use it as a ProxyCommand as described in the fist link above. Here are some more detailed instructions.
