You are right. It is weird for using as a writing pad.
Perhaps a "stylus input" mode could be added to BlueMaemo.

You know, Nintendo DS has this homebrew software called Colors!, that has just some basic features. Pressure sensitive brush with size and opacity control. Hard and soft brush, zoom, save and nice colour palette. Now this is not my painting, but it is done on the DS Colors! http://cache.lifehacker.com/assets/r.../colors-ds.png

For now you might be better off with VNC. =\
I use Xournal on my tablet and transfer PDF to my laptop, not ideal of course.
