Not necessarily. It will be interesting to see both how the N900 and the even bigger Dell Streak do in the mass market. I, for one, like bigger as long as it fits in my non-cargo pants pocket.

is the n900 not mainstream like the e series are not... because they are aimed specifically at business users?

I know this stage 4 of 5, but come on. They are are mass producing the n900, it is not supposed to be a novalty item so lets stop treating it like that. folks are so proud to remind us that the platform is several years old, and is stable and mature etc. So act like it, who cares that there are not 2340852703485 apps available for it?

I think that the N900 is thicker (D), whereas the Droid will be bigger (H & W), but thinner. This is WAG from the pictures, of course, since the specs aren't out yet. I would prefer a smaller, if thicker, device - it can be held more securely and is less subject to hitting its corners against things.

The reason I think Droid is going to be bigger (in H & W) is that they had to accomodate the trackpad on the keyboard. The kbd has 11 columns plus the pad in its width, whereas N900 is 13 keys wide. Interestingly, this means Droid has only 5 more keys, and I can see at least 4 of them wasted (a magnifying glass, a stack, 2 blanks, and an extra ALT). I also think that the imprecision of a capacitive screen forced them to have a trackpad.

I may be wrong, but I get the impression that nokia don't actually crank out a lot of advertising until the device is resleased. Don't think I saw anything for the n95 until after it was in my hand. I suspect it's about wanting to be able to provide instant gratification, instead of having a load of people wanting something that isn't available yet (nokia wouldn't want that!!)

In which case, comparing the advertising of the n900 to anything else yet is a moot point.

Considering the stunning success the N95 has been, they would've been well advised to change that tactic.

Comparing the marketing campaign of the N900 to that of everything else, such as the Droid or Blackberry or Jesus-phone, is very relevant, because the smartphone market is where Nokia needs to be competitive. Now. Not after the world has standardized on Android.

official specs on the droid:

http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US...ROID-US-EN.alt

- 10g lighter than n900
- 5mm longer, but 5mm thinner than the n900

seems to rely on the microsd for storage?

Let's face it - the N900 caused a lot of excitement in the tech press, but there's little or no interest from the general public because it hasn't hit their radar. Whereas my non-tech friends know that there's a "Google Phone" coming on Verizon, and are looking for it.

I don't care how big it is, I care what it can do stock and tweaked. I'd be happy to wear MC Hammer pants if I need to for a phone that meets my expectations.

The Sholes is apparently not the hardware competition for the N900 as expected.

1. 550mhz CPU
2. 16gb micro sd installed in the slot- no 16gb built in as speculated. N900 has 32gb more memory and it is a faster class memory. Bet the bank the 16gb is a class 2 on Sholes.
