N800. 1 week old. The latest system was preinstalled. I only installed Gaim, PGE Calendar/Contacts/File Manager, Mplayer, FMradio. It froze on me couple of times. On the time before the last one I had to yank the battery out, (found on the forum) helped. Yesterday it froze on me just while browsing and turned itself off. I put it to charge, but after a while it would still not turn back on/indicate charging.
So I did the battery thing again. Upon insertion the screen went all white with nice blue vertical stripes all over it. And it would just sit like that, would only dim the screen a little. Doesn't go off/on. The joystick doesn't lit up. After awhile the screen finally got turned off. Only turns back on to the stripes.
I haven't flashed the damn thing yet. Do you thing that it's worth trying? I've bought it from the J&R. Shall I just ask for the RMA? My wife thinks that N800 in general seems like an underdeveloped product and I should just get my money back. I already got attached to my Nokia though.

Please kindly suggest.

I would exchange it for another device. Your situation sounds highly unusual and likely is a hardware fault.

I've only heard of similar problems when either the tablet is bad or there is virtual memory extended out to a bad SD card. If you have an alternate SD card, try that for a bit but failing that call Nokia!

turn off metalayer-crawl, that is what kept killing my system randomly.

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ight=metalayer

/etc/rc2.d/S99metalayer-crawl0 stop
rm /etc/rc2.d/S99metalayer-crawl0

I kept hanging and crashing on me, I finally was able to see the process using 100MB memory, I have a large swap 180MB. I have not had any problems after removing this? Not sure if it is your problem, but kinda sounds like it.

Update:
aparently the device was not dead after all. It sat waiting for me like that, with stripes, on the
charger all day. To my surprise, it restartarted just fine, but only AFTER I pulled the charger off.

As for the SD card, at the time of crashing I only had the 128-er card that n800 came with. No, I haven't messed with any memory settings, haven't expanded it to the SD. Should I?

I went to look up the memory settings and haven't found the infamous "metacrawler" in the processes there. \Control panel\Memory\Device\Details, right? I'm a newb to linux, I haven't gotten to such high matters like 'become root' and stuff. Is it worth it?

I will probably try to get some answers from Nokia about my situation, maybe they'll say right the way "Exchange!"

thank you for the support!
