I've changed my tune on this. I originally was frustrated by the delays, fearing that they would hurt the n900. But now I realize that a buggy device would do far more harm to the long-term prospects of Maemo. I imagine Nokia is balancing these things as well: short-term success of the N900 vs. long-term success of Maemo.

Anyway. This argument basically applies to the U.S. smartphone market. And everyone knows that the rest of the world has far better taste in smartphones than the U.S.

Also I think for larger masses there are few things in DROID that make it interesting, like:
- It's thinner (I would love that one too)
- Better know OS with Google integration
- Capacitative screen
- New navigation software

Though I don't know how the operators and subsidies affect the situation.

I'll end up with N900 though since there's even no idea when DROID might become available in Europe and as far as I understand N900 is far better with multi-tasking which is important for me.
Better known OS? Well there is more noise around Android but Linux (core of Maemo) is fairly well known too I think you'll find.

Capacitive screen - no fun taking gloves off when outside and need to press the screen: surely being in Helsinki you should appreciate that!

The one saving grace is the N900 uses Tmo 3G in the US and Verizon is (on average) $30 more expensive per month for service plans with these type of devices. Adds up real quick.

There is no comparison between the two releases. The N900 is NOT being released through a carrier and is NOT being advertised really at all in the USA. If you know about the N900 there is because you saw something on a web site etc and went and found out about it. If thats the case then chances are you knw what you are going to get in the N900 and the fact that the droid is coming out a few days earlier isnt going to make a difference. If it does then its pretty good bet you are just some tech kiddy wanting a new toy NOW NOW NOW and holding your breath until you are blue until you get it.

I really don't think the N900 is taking much of a hit in the USA at all

It's obvious that monster sales and world domination have not been prioritized with this maemo release, but there has been an emphasis on improving the out of the box experience which was simply not there with the N810/N800 and 770. All three of those devices needed SIGNIFICANT bug fixes that I'm sure Nokia are trying to avoid with the N900 as it has a wider appeal outside of 'tech leaders' and early adopters.
It is not hard to see that Nokia is biding their time and working hard on maemo 6 in order to try take over the world in Q4 2010. I'll quote a Nokia employee/mobile blogger RussB to put this in context.

"Apple R&D spending: 2006: $712M, 2007: $782M, 2008: $1.1B, 2009: $1.3B . Total: $3.9B. Nokia spent $7.24B in 2008 alone."

I'm not saying it's my opinion or that it would be better. Just what people seem to be expecting/wanting. Though I have to admit it's just a gut feeling.

the fact that the droid is coming out a few days earlier isnt going to make a difference.
The few days probably isn't making large difference. What might be making some difference is that now there's two somewhat similar devices. Instead of buying N900 this week people will be waiting and reading apparently really positive reviews of the DROID too. I don't think it might be too far fetched to think that some people might reconsider?

But these are just some thoughts and speculations about what might affect the situation at least a bit, nothing too serious. Just taking part in the discussion.

But now I realize that a buggy device would do far more harm to the long-term prospects of Maemo.
Yeah, I would say it wouldn't be a question if they should delay it or launch as buggy, but perhaps just whether the unlucky situation that it has to be postponed affects the situation now that there's also new competitor launched recently.

If it's not released in November it will inconvience me. I'll be paying for a smartphone data pplan when the best the current phone can do is edge. edge + n800 is sllllooowwww. Plus I keep missing emails and all since I don't have time to check it. And seeing how long edge takes to load maemo.org, I don't want to see it try on my n800 at edge speeds.
