Do you want to play them on your PC or just to store them?
You could save the dot deb install files to your PC, but typically you might need some depedancies that will not get pulled down unless you install via the application manager.

The games are not going away. but running 0s2008 on Maemo 5 will be a problem.

Although it is technically possible to download and save apps on a desktop computer for later transfer to the N900, it is much better (at least for a beginner) to download and install apps on the N900 itself, using its built-in Application Manager. That way you always get the latest version, and get the required "dependencies" that each app requires.

I don't get the advantage here. Yes, possible, but more complicated (you have to use dkpg instead of apt/App Manager to install on the device if I remember correctly).

In simple terms: it's like wanting to install some gizmo (performance-filter or something) onto your car. You could:
a) buy the part and install yourself
b) buy the part and take car&part to service
c) just take the car to a service, tell them what you want and let them handle it
As installing apps goes, option a) would mean compiling for yourself. This takes some knowledge, just like fiddling around the car
Option b) is what you're asking about: get the part (app) and ask someone (system utilities on the phone) to install it. This has some advantages (you get exactly what part you want). However, if some other parts are needed, you're stuck, because no-one is automatically getting them for you
Obviously, option c) is the easiest: the system does it all. Maemo has an automated app manager that does everything needed to get things running. Just ask it to install something and it checks for compatibility and requirements for you
So as you can see, it is possible to download now and install later, but it's harder and without much reason
