I know all these websites are just supposed to be downloaded to the tablets, but I wonder if we could get hosting somewhere? maemopages.com or something...

I would love to see this work continue for both google maps and possibly other websites!
I wouldn't say it's specifically for the tablets since smartphones could use this too. Granted it is biased towards devices with a touchscreen. >.>

edit: it still gives driving directions in English though :-)
I typed Amsterdam and it sent me to Amsterdam, Netherlands instead of Amsterdam, NY, USA.

Something else. I just notice on right bottom an arrow which allows a minimap. This is also pretty useful for quickly navigating, or overview of where you are.

I gave it a quick try on my E71 and it didn't seem to work. Problem with the javascript maybe ?

Probably, considering Google loves javascript and ajax and the default web browser microb on the tablets have historically had trouble with Google services like the default browser interface for Google Calendar or even Google Maps.

What do you mean 'doesn't seem to work'?

I just tried with E71 S60browser, here is my experience:
  • Page loaded.
  • Entering Amsterdam changed it in Amsterdam, Nederland
  • However did not load the map after Enter pressed.
  • Had to remove the text 'Enter location press ENTER'.
  • When I clicked on World it did load something, but somewhere else in the world.
  • Loaded picture was too big for display.
  • Whole interface assumes 800x480.
  • (Conclusion: by default it is not something for all mobile devices. For that it'd need some modifications.)

Opera Mini 5.0 beta on E71 did not work though. Buttons are shown but in different way/order, and no picture shown. Enter doesn't work either, does not replace Amsterdam to Amsterdam, Nederland.

I stopped at bullet #4 above. That's a good enough definition of "doesn't work" for me, especially as it wasn't designed for such a phone :-)

Well then try >>THIS<< zipped file. It is tweaked for N8**'s, runs in portrait mode, and should run well on other devices.

This should in no way diminish fro twaelti's most excellent work. In fact, Keep them comming Tom. There is a lot that can be done using your skills. >> EG: Local Searches <<

As I said before, I'm just an old school HTML hack and do not have the script skills much beyond "hello world".

If you find this useful, thank twaelti first, it's his API.

Oh, and I changed the maps opening location to GeraldKo's home town

Small update.
You can now optionally pass some parameters to the page to e.g. set your start (and end) location, the language preference for the directions and enable traffic info.

Example 1:
http://www.tomch.com/maemap2.html?from=Bern&l=de&t=0
Fills the "From"-Field with "Bern", sets the directions language to German and disables the traffic layer (can still be enabled later again using the buttons).

Example 2:
http://www.tomch.com/maemap2.html?fr...xford&l=it&t=1
Loads page with presets from Heathrow, to Oxford, Show Traffic, Italian directions.

PS: Anybody interested in that stuff should take a look at www.flashearth.com . Looks good on the desktop and also works on the N900! (needs stylus and cursor mode, controls are quite small :-)

Funny, this one now speaks French to me, even without passing any parameters... :-)

Some kind of pin dropping to add a favourite (or source or destination).

Showing Google Streetview picture.

See picture of problem I had with Wikipedia enabled. Can't close the pop up text!
