Dunno if it was a DoS, but the pages were down - twitter was buzzing with it.

NO!

The Nokia front page was down for several hours. No-one knows why. I was just speculating with tongue firmly in cheek.

Sheesh! You guys take everything seriously!

Yep and unfortunately Nokia has demonstrated an extremely poor ability to adapt to the market. Sure it's still selling a lot of phones but its competitors are running rings around it. Devices like the Droid are announced and then available for purchase very quickly with reviews and all.

We're now in the first week of November and Nokia customers still have to rely on retailer dates because there's no official information. People in different markets have no idea whether they're getting the product anywhere from next week to 2010.

TOtally agreed with you man. I've been waited for this device for months and yet I still have no idea when will this device ever coming to New Zealand or Asia. This is terrible, if this is still going, I might just get some other phone and drop my dream of Pure Linux Experience in my pocket. Seriously, NOKIA getting suck badly at keeping up with the technology. The only phone that they are a head of everyone else is the N95 and it was great though the stupid RAM limitation issues. NOKIA never release anything that make their phone lives for more than 2years of the released date. They should start thinking how to take on the competitors in the market right now. Their device are quite OVER PRICED and very buggy software. I'm hoping this N900 will be their next WOW thing but seem like it is getting old again before it even released. Pricing is also a big matter for N900 in Europe and UK. Also their selected REGIONs will not helping their marketing. NOKIA getting more dummer every year somewhat. If they want to have a bigger market then why not do a world wide releases. This way they get more customers. I know that they required alot of organisation and shipping cost but APPLE Iphone did it. NZ got it the same time as USA and UK. What a nice marketing scheme apple made.

NO-KIA please hear us out... Let the pet out already

"Select regions" is really dumb and the Nokia store "exclusives" are even dumber. Let retailers handle the retail end of things. I have absolutely no idea why people should be waiting an extra week (at least) on the basis of ordering or not ordering direct from Nokia. I don't live in the UK so I can't order from the UK Nokia store but I can order from Amazon UK.

Both of these things just mean that Nokia devices have an enormous price premium for months after release. If you're in the "wrong" market or don't have access to the Nokia store you have to buy it on ebay at a variable price with a variable level of customer service and satisfaction.

Why bother with the hassle for a new platform (Maemo) which lacks applications and which we know is unfinished (step 4 of 5 at least). We also know capacitive screens are the way to go in future Nokia devices and the N900 doesn't have one. As users we're essentially investing in Nokia's future competence with this platform and buying on the strength of what it might become rather than what it is right now.

People wonder why others are getting disgusted and cancelling their preorders etc. It's because their faith in Nokia's competence and ability to change is being tested by a release cycle that has all the failures of previous release cycles.

Personally I'll go with the N900 whenever it comes out. I want what it offers and I want to develop applications for it. However I worry for a future in which Google and Apple dominate the industry and smartphones are merely paths to user monetisation.
