If it was true that as some say they both run at the same speed, I would prefer the N800. The fact is, they don't; the N810 is clearly faster. You are absolutely right, it makes no sense for someone to say that the two are virtually identical and yet they prefer the N810 even though the N800 is much less expensive.
I strongly disagree that the browsing speed of both is the same. I use Tear on both; I use all the same software on both. I prefer the slightly bigger screen size of the N800 (the last time I said that, a bunch of people quickly put me down and said that the screen size was identical, until Texrat intervened and said the N800 screen size was bigger.)
If you believe them, you should clearly get the N800, unless you want a crappy keyboard and not that great GPS or you care about the smaller size of the N810.
The logic is all on the side of the N800 unless the N810 is faster, and people who bought the N810 at a premium are fools.

The N800 D-Pad is MUCH better. The two sd card slots are nice.
