When i pre-ordered the N900 I decided to sell my E71 after backing up my contacts using the ovi cloud sync service. Now am wondering if there is a way to sync this contacts with the N900. Does the N900 support syncing with Ovi contacts
The N900 can sincronize you conctats with your account chat or voip. The service supported in the pre-test unit ( that I have ) is :
- Ovi by Nokia
- Skype
- Google talk
- Jabber
- Sip
So ... the answer is ... YES :-)
If you want to see the screens ... let me know.
There is a SyncML service over HTTP for OVI users that allows them to sync contacts, calendar, tasks etceteras to a web database. It's extremely useful and even allows web based modification of all information before synching back to the handset. Works a bit like PCSuite does but no need to have a computer of your own.
There is syncevolution that should be avilable, but who knows if it works yet with the contacts backend db on the n900. But, yes, I am bummed that the n900 does not support syncml over http out of the box. I have run my own funambol server for years and there is no way I am letting exchange activesync on my networks(just as a philosophical point, there is nothing wrong with the protocol per se)
So for now, I will be pulling contacts from funambol server to a temporary outlook install on a windows machine with funambol plugin and then using ovi suite to sync the n900 with outlook.
