By the end of the year, Nokia will be paying me to take this phone off of their hands. Not because it sucks, but because holiday discounting in the US is AWESOME.

I sent a quick message to Amazon customer service and they adjusted my total.

If I'm not mistaken amazon's price is still $529, and the $50 rebate will come in a VISA card of some sort once you activate an Ovi account.

Correct, so the price for everyone who kept the pre-order from before the 16th will still be $529, but they won't be eligable for the rebate.

Icontacted both Newegg and Amazon andtheyconfirmed that it doesnt metter when u place a preoorder, as soon as ur card charged, thats when the actual order starts.

Question is what does Nokia think about the issue - they are the ones who need to send you the rebate - not Amazon/Newegg.

Amazon said to me:

"Note that, we don't charge you for an order until it enters the shipping process, so you won't be charged for this item until it's available and we've shipped it to you."

BUT

"Regarding the rebate, your order will not be qualified for the rebate, your order must be placed in between November 16, 2009 - December 31, 2009 to eligible for rebate. If you want to take the advantage of the rebate, you may cancel this order and place an new order."

So I took a chance and the better price and cancelled and placed a new order.

For Newegg that seems to be correct (and checking my previous invoices from other products from Newegg only show charge date). But the feedback from Amazon seems to range from yes (like when you contacted them) to no (when other people contacted them).

True. The rebate form says:
Mail-In Form, dated store receipt and UPC/barcode panel must be postmarked by January 8, 2010.
And the form contains a "Purchase Date" that must be filled in. The real question is what will be on the printed materials that come with the box. Most of the time, the purchase is considered to be when the item is is shipped, since that is what closes the deal.

I suspect that if Amazon/Newegg include a pre-order date that is prior to November 16th, Nokia might reject those. But it's far from clear, since technically nobody could actually buy these devices prior to that date.

But neither of their opinions matter. It is up to Nokia to honor the rebate.
