I am confused regarding installation of OPEN-ROX. Rather than risk messing up my 2gb MMC on which I'd installed a duplicate operating system on my 770 (as previously reported), I've taken an old 1gb MMC and flashed and installed another duplicate operating system on that, all in accord with Fanoush's above referenced hacks (which I'd used previously with the 2gb MMC). I'm not certain what to do next. Do I download the zhasper OPEN-ROX6 tar to my MMC operating system or to my flash operating system? In fact, I've done both, but cannot successfully untar either using any of the standard tar commands. Also, there's references above to such other tarred or compressed files such as http://penguinbait.com/tar, http://penguinbait.com/tar.gz and http://penguinbait.com/bzip2 or http://penguinbait.com/bzip2.gz. What, if anything, do I do with these?
In other words, I'm at a loss. I've installed many applications on my 770 before, using the Application Manager or otherwise, but I can't say that I can follow, or necessarily even understand, the installation instructions in this thread. What am I missing?
download OPEN-ROX
download bzip2 or (bzip2.gz and run gunzip bzip2.gz)
mv bzip2 /usr/bin
download tar or (tar.gz and run gunzip tar.gz)
rm /bin/tar
mv tar /bin
Now, run cd / <--- dont forget this
tar jxvf /path/to/file/OPEN-ROX6.tar.bz2
On my 770, I have created a new system on mmc as explained and boot well on it. After untar your file on / on mmc, the first reboot on mmc work well. But when I chose the menu to switch to OPENBOX, the screen became white forever ! The only action available is the power off button to shutdown the system. And after, when, on multi-boot menu, I choose the mmc2, the progress bar increase to ~80% and stop forever too!
Have you any idea about this?
Penguinbait: Thanks for the further clarification, but Im still confused about which of my two operating systems I'm supposed to be in when performing all these operations -- the MMC or flash. Such as, when I download the OPEN-ROX and the others, where am I doing this from or to, the MMC or the flash?
Should be approx. the same size of the uncompressed *tar file. If I recall correctly, there are some file overwritten, so you have to take this difference into account. Right, penguinbait?

jlbrd, did you install python before, starting openbox? I have no 770 to test with, but it should be working? Are there other 770 users, using OPEN-ROX with it working?
I am going to have to buy a used 770, or see if someone will donate one

You should be doing this on MMC, I do not know if it works on flash, I never tried. I keep my flash new unbooted? If anyone tries it, and it works on Flash and you still have room to run, let us know. Remember its going to use up all your space you have to install applications, not really sure why you would want to do this.

EDIT: The *tar has ~94mb.
Thats Correct, it will use up a little more, because of whatever block size you used when creating your partitions. if you save a 2k file on 4k block, it will use the whole 4k. So it comes out to be a little larger, roughly 98-99 I think

Yes, I have installed python2.5 just before start openbox. Perhaps it's not compatible with the 770. If someone donate to me a N800, I will see if my actions are well.
