I'm almost certain that you'd need to embed the .jpg cover into each track/mp3 file. IIRC, winamp has such an option.

Yes, embedding the cover art most probably works, but why SOME of my cover.jpg's are still displayed without embedding those..? This means that there must be something wrong somewhere. Does anyone know what's the easiest way to embed cover art on Ubuntu? Does Ogg Vorbis support this?

if you have 5000 tracks then downloading album art for them can be very painful. Especially if you move those tracks between devices. With embeded art the artwork stays with the track, once you have done it you never have to do it again.

    I use Wine + mp3tag.

I had that problem on my n800 in Canola a year ago so for my entire mp3 collection I embedded cover art and additionally also put a folder.jpg for each album.

I figured that all my Ogg albums have no coverart displayed although I've embedded coverart for them as well. I also have two albums (both 320kb/s although I have many other 320s that work) which won't display the coverart in the media player, but the media player widget does, which puzzles me a lot... I am using mp3tag 2.45a to tag my mp3s/oggs

make sure that your album art is tagged as "Cover.Front" if not you will get strange behaviour depending on the application

I also don't get cover art for OGG files, just the generic turntable graphic. Also, OGG files aren't grouped as an album, they all go in unknown.
