afaik, nintendo is checking if they can sue nokia, right? because they advertised the emulator with super mario world in one of their official videos. i mean, really, i had to laugh hard when i saw that mario in the nokia-video. was this intentional stupidity? not like they dont know its kinda illegal to show and advertise.

easy answer to the op: you need to download the game-roms by yourself, they dont come with the emulator.
BUT it is illegal to download the roms if you dont own the original cartridge of the game!

that is some awesome timing. I call Nintendo plant on jedi. Hes the Nintendo piracy tsar!

Seriously though, look out for these on the forums, thats how they might try to get around the emulator not being illegal, if someone offical on a Nokia forum helps a person infringe copyright with an N900, bad news.

Before the N900 I had a 3gs and which I sold for an inflated price on ebay to get this device. And yes, there can be no doubt the the N900 is superior to everything out there.

But we need to catch up something severe on how we treat new/less experienced members of the community

When I asked questions on the 3gs forum I received help.

When I ask for help here I get ridiculed?

What does that say about us?

While we all hope the N900/Maemo can take it's rightful place and market share for being such an delightful slice of innovation

What hope does it have if the members of it's community treat newbies as I have been?

No one is ridiculing you, they are simply saying you should use common sense. It should be obvious to everyone ( especially N900 owners, since it is a phone for the more advanced users and not the general iPhone population noobs ) if something is not listed, to use Google or Bing to search for it. It should also be obvious that roms obviously aren't going to be listed on this site due to variable factors and the fact that it would be illegal.

The bottom line is that the ines is an NES hardware emulator. That's all that it is. It does not control any NES games at all. The NES emulator (actually all game console emulators) work by loading up a digital (file) representation of the game cartridge. To get a legitimate game file, you have to own a copy of the game cartridge, access to hardware and software which can read back the game catridge and create a copy of the ROM catridge image. ANy other way is infringing the copyright of the game.

Every legitimate console emulator site will NOT tell you where you can get copies of the game images. They run clean sites. They want to avoid any lawsuits in getting the site and emulator software shutdown and remove from the Internet. The game console emulators emulate solely the console hardware. As such they are perfectly legal. The Free/Open Source Software community share much the same attitude when it comes to copyrights. the F/OSS cummunity respects the copyright and licensing terms of software they they use. The F/OSS is also very helpful. They will help you with questions or problems you are having with Linux/Maemo. They will bend over backwards to help people having serious problems. But they (we) will no help your commit copyright infringement.

If you need help in "ripping" your NES cartridges here's a site for the ines software. It can provide more help and insight in getting it running in general.

And the software documentation.

I bet Nintendo will let this story quietly go away.

I don't think they would be able to get very far with any kind of lawsuit and secondly... It would create all kinds of press if they tried to go to court. We already saw the headlines Nokia vs Apple made. It would just bring massive amounts of free press to nokia n900 and emulating when I think they would rather most people not hear and know about the n900s ability to do this.

a rom file is independent on Hardware platform (doesnt matter if its an n900, pc or mac you are playing from).

The emulator software (i.e., not the game) , however, is dependent on platform, so you will have to get the right emulator software for the n900.

The roms themselves are made from your own copy of a game.
It is believed by some, but never actually tried in court, that if you own lets say super mario, a downloaded rom-copy could be used legally by you.

Use google to find rom versions of the games you own and open them in your faviurite emulator software

Good luck!

Posting rom locations on forums is not a good thing to do. Searching will give you the answers.

An example if you do find a rom (public domain rom is my example), it must be unzipped. Most emu's on other systems (almost all in fact) all run from the zip, but these were designed to run unzipped. Very inefficient for storage space (75% more), but better than not having one at all.
