There are quite a few requests for the ability to sync with Google (calendar, contacts, email, tasks, etc). However, the only method for syncing items other than mail is Mail for Exchange (MfE) via the ActiveSync/Exchange protocol.

In the thread dedicated to MfE, a considerable amount of the conversation centered around the (in)ability to sync with Google, and the continued explanation that Google's implementation isn't the same as Exchange 2007, so it may or may not work.

So instead of complaining about MfE not working 100% with Google, which is more or less a workaround. I'm wanting to know how we can best organize to get the feature implemented correctly.

In addition to the limited MfE implementation, it would be nice to be able to sync multiple calendars, tasks, contacts (possibly only specific groups of contacts) or other "advanced" features.

Again, this is more of an organizational thread to determine the best way to get a more streamlined approach/application for syncing with Google. Whether it be the community petitioning Google directly or us petitioning Nokia to work on this directly with Google...that is part of the discussion I would like to start.

I'm surprised this thread has no activity. Perhaps it should be moved to the Brainstorming section.

    I'm in for this 100%.
I must have contacts, multiple calendars and tasks syncing with my gmail account.

So I guess the first thing to find out is if there is an open API for the Gmail side? If not that we may have a problem, and we may need to get someone to speak to google!

If there is an API for the google, side I'm pretty sure we could find a dev dude/duddet on here to write a quick syncing app.

    Thanks
    Chris

    I have started writing one!

I got pissed off last night so started writing some code and some design ideas on paper using libgdata for the multiple calendars and calendar-backend (a c++ lib) is used in the n900.

I have got as far as retrieving calendars from google and all their events and building a package for libgdata on scratchbox.

Synchronization is a tricky business, and it is unlikely that any quick & dirty solution will work effectively.

Google supports the SyncML protocol through Google Sync. Perhaps the best way to get what you want is to build a SyncML client for the N900?

I should point out that there are several projects at funambol.com that include sources for projects that implement SyncSource modules for SyncML synchronization that could be a good place to start. https://www.forge.funambol.org/parti.../projects.html

I am completely disappointed with all of these "Server is not responding" messages. Please, someone write an app to sync at least calendar correctly.

The built in Exchange support works with google's mobile sync service as long as you DON'T check email. I have my contacts and calendar syncing no problem.

    http://www.google.com/mobile/product...html#p=default

Just follow the active sync instructions and don't bother to try email just yet.
