i do think this is something google does.
Because if you only sync once in a day or maybe 2 time a day. the syncs are working fine (basic calendar sync)

But if i up that counter then i also get server not responding and so on...

I think the best way woiuld be SyncML or if somebody makes something that talks to google through there api's and is then is a normal sync server point for the N900
    Something that Goosync.com does.

I second that this is a high priority problem. Syncing with Goolge services is a must-have for so many people that this should be very high in the list of things to accomplish.

A thought... if Android is so "open" they say it is supposed to be couldn't we get good references from their development tools or something on how to tackle the remaining problems??? (I'm just a n00b so ignore this if it sounds stupid)

So at last, I was able to sync my google account with contacts, calendar and email, but while contacts and calendar are ok, my email account got some issues. I got all my folders (even the spam one perfectly sinchronised) but it seems that 'inbox folder' is still not working at all, at the moment. it only shows old emails. Something is moving. better than nothing anyway

Android OS is open, all Google products are not open. That's how Google stays on top. This was a big contention when the Android OS CyanogenMod ROM was getting shipped around with Google Apps in the ROM (Gmail, Market, Maps, etc...) and Google sent their lawyers after the developer.

Android OS is just the OS framework, not the sync services nor the applications that make use of the sync services.

I remember Ari wrote a blog post about services awhile back, guess Google beat Nokia to the punch to indispensable services.

I'm all for a Google specific contact/calendar syncing tool.

Someone else mentioned that the code of this tool (which does google calendar/contact syncing for the GPE suite of apps) is well abstracted and it might be easy to plug in support for the Maemo 5 calendar-backend:

    https://garage.maemo.org/projects/erminig/

Their are python bindings for the Google gdata API's:

    http://code.google.com/apis/calendar...de_python.html

Which have also been packaged for Maemo:

    https://garage.maemo.org/projects/python-gdata/

There are also a few other threads where this has been discussed in some form or another:

    • http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=31315
    • http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=35152
    • http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=34184
    • http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=33548

I haven't really had time to look much at code myself (in particular at the calendar-backend api), but would love to see this happen.

I did an initial sync of my N900 with Google (contacts/calendar) and it seemed to work OK. But I turned off automatic syncing because I'm worried about the integrity of my data.

I realize that some of the fields I use the most (like Notes) aren't visible using the Maemo contacts app. Hopefully that will be fixed in an update.

But here's what I'm worried about. Some of the data in the fields I do see seem incomplete. For example. I have a contact called "Acton Boxborough Regional High School Attendence Line".

After sync, this shows up on the N900 as "Acton Line". Specifically, any contact with more than two words in the name ends up visible on the N900 as just "firstword lastword".

If MfE syncs with google again, will it cause the contact's name to be damaged?

If I edit this contact on the N900 to (say) add a phone number, will it then damage the name in the google data store?

I hope someone can give me the answer.

    Thanks,

    --Jim--

for all those suggesting google calendar sync over syncml, this is an official reply from google:

    Hi everyone,

We only support synchronizing Contacts using SyncML. Calendar sync is only available for Blackberry using the Google Sync app, and Windows Mobile and iPhone/iPod Touch using Exchange ActiveSync.

    Thanks,

    Douglas

So how to do we go about implementing a SyncML solution? Are there not already libraries for this?

Or better question is: what is the next step to get this implemented?

I am not sure if this helps: but on the iPhone you can link in the google calendar via caldav. 2 way sync works pretty well - haven't got any issues yet.

So you have contacts via syncml, calendar via caldav and mail via imap. At least I am doing it that way on the iPhone (and company stuff via the exchange client)

edit: sry for always quoting the iPhone, but that's my reference currently and I am just waiting for the n900 to support exchange + google to be able to switch
