Hey folks,
i will be getting my N900 next weekend after 3 months of waiting lol. But i wanted to ask a few things, which i'm not sure about...

1) Does the N900 have problems with old(er) sim cards?
I read here somewhere they can drain more power from the battery or make the device freeze at times. Is that true?
My sim card is from Vodafone and it is 3,5 years old. Should I get a new one and is there any difference in sim cards now and back then?

2) What about the battery when i get the device? How should i proceed?
Turn it on and fully charge it?
Turn it on, let the battery die and then fully charge it?
Don't turn it on, charge it fully, then turn it on?
I've read about some battery and startup issues, so that's why I'm asking.

3) About applications and repositories. I can download apps for the N900 only via the repositories in the application manager, right?
That means i need to have an internet connection active (either wifi or mobile network), correct? Thus if i don't have wifi, i have to pay for the data? The "extras" repository is the safe one, right?

4) If i lose the stylus, will there be a way to get a new one? Will Nokia be selling them as accessory, just like for other touch phones (5800XM) ?

5) When the new firmware comes out, it will be pretty large in size i assume.
Can i download it through my PC via USB or do i have to get it through the phone? And will i lose any settings and data when updating?

6) What is the average size of apps for download?

7) How exactly does QIK work? Does it really stream live video and how? And Skype - calling to an internet Skype account is free?

8) What is the maximum class of cards the N900 supports? Would a SanDisk 16GB Class 6 MicroSDHC card be ok?

Sorry if these questions are silly, but i just want to get them straight before mine arrives, so i can know how to do everything out of the box. I've been following the phone since September, but never really got these answers i think.

Thanks!

1. No (my sim card is also roughly 4 years old)
2. I recommend fully charge it, then use until you get first warning of battery low then recharge, do this 5 times.
3. Extras-testing are not 100% safe, Extras are safe
4. Sure eBay or spare part shops will have this
5. No, OTA firmware are optimised and compress to smallest size possible, to give you an example N97 firmware update was 150MB over NSU while OTA it was only about 15MB
6. Largest I've seen so far is 10MB, the rest around a few hundreds KB
7. You mean Qik? It works perfectly, and Skype calling to Skype account = free
8. They don't make much difference unless you do some heavy stuff with the card, class 2 is fine, no need to throw bunch of money on class 6

1) Try to get a new one if you can't get 12 hours of battery life out of it.

2) Try not to let it die too often. It's probably a good idea to cycle fully sometime in the first week though.

3) The answer to all your questions is yes

4) Probably, not sure if it's been confirmed.

5) Firmware updates can be done from a PC. In general you shouldn't lose settings but backing them up beforehand is a good idea anyway.

6) That probably varies a lot by the type of app. Few apps should be over a couple of MB.

7) Not sure about about QIP (are you sure that's the name?). Skype is the same as Skype on a PC, so free to computer-Skype apart from any possible data costs.

8) That sounds like a good choice, it should be faster than a Class 2 in an N900.

6) Biggest app (not for public download yet because still in development) I have seen yet was 250 MB, smallest 2KB.

Since I would be getting my N900 soon as well hopefully, I thought I should point this out ... you probably forgot to ask the most important question ..

How to deal with the microphone problem .. Like, should the phone be charged using the charger before, or after testing the mic for the first time .. ?

I know you asked about the battery charging, but I thought the question should be rephrased to include the microsphone issue too, so that a better answer (if any) can be gotten ..

so people, whats you take on the charging question with regards to the mic problem .. ?

Don't really think the charging has anything to do with the microphone failure. Seems like some units are just defective. But then, what do I know Just seems more logical.

I was always lead to believe that a rechargable battery should always be run right down, where possible then fully charge it. That's what I always do with mine.

I have a question about the Facebook widget. Do you only have to sign into your facebook account, the first time you use it or do you have to sign in everytime you turn your phone off and on? Thanks

Just save your password when you sign in, and you shouldnt have to sign in again, even if you turn your phone off.
