I want to have text files either in Notes or Conboy with confidential information, is there any way these can be protected so they can't be accessed by an unauthorised person?

Yep there is an app called Password safe, which should do the job.

I was going to suggest using the 'Secure' mode, but it looks like even when the device is is switched off in 'Secure mode', it can be mounted. I feel when the device is secured, it should be off limits.

currently, vim in Extras does not support encryption (:X). Adding it would be a nice enhancement.

I have just tried passwordsafe but it looks like it meant just for storing passwords, what I need is some way of encrypting note files so they cant be read by others. Can anybody think of any workarounds or alternatives?

Well, the device is not encrypted.
So by accessing the disk anybody could read anything anyway, same problem with any other Windows/Linux/MacOS computer out there.

On my N810 I have been using Gringotts - it specifically encrypts and decrypts text files. Try it on Maemo 5...

Before bothering with installing Gringotts (which not everyone has found easy), I'd be interested to know: is it GUI based or command line? If you don't know German, is it pretty obvious what you need to do to encrypt and open a file?

thanks

The German part of the question really confuses me.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but I would be more interested in having a secure directory that used some form of encryption and required a password to access.

Are there not any encryption programs available?
