Coming from a Blackberry with T-Mobile that has UMA integrated I'm starting to miss the feature. The T-Mobile coverage isn't uber strong here and I've been thinking if there is such an app which mimics the UMA capability? I know the Blackberry is hardware UMA support... Just throwing the idea out there. Thanks!

I currently have a 6086 which does UMA, and I have an N900 which currently does not. I am mainly using the N900 right now as a linux handheld for fun and development, as I am a big Debian supporter and just couldnt wait to mess with this thing. I have read conflicting statements about weather or not UMA can be achieved through software alone, or requires hardware. most of what I have found would lead me to believe that the hardware part is needed for the "seamless" hand off between UMA WiFi and Cell signal. If we decide to believe that this is the case, what I find hard to believe then is that a non handing off software UMA connection cant be made and used at will. I would pay for software that could do this and then probably switch to using my N900 for everything. Ive been wanting to propose this idea for a while now but wasnt really sure where or how to do it. a software UMA connection, even one that doesnt hand off, would be a huge thing for this device. Id personally rather that UMA didnt try to hand off anyway, because at my place, occasionally a little burst of cell signal will come through the house and quickly go away. If Im on a call when this happens, it tries to hand off and the call is quickly lost. UMA is the reason I went with T-Mobile, and I, and I know many others, have been rather disappointed that all the smartphones out in the last year have been without UMA. I was told by a T-Mobile salesperson that they couldnt figure out how to make UMA compatible with android, but thinking about it, I have to wonder if maybe google just doesnt want it because they would rather you use google voice. for me, a software UMA, even limited in ability, would be a MUCH more desirable solution than using something like skype or google voice.
