Make sure the folder you are plonking your music and video in is one of the 'Public' folders....not the User folders in Windows Vista/7...those are locked by default and so your N900, whilst being able to SEE the files in there, cannot actually PLAY the files in there.

I just tested. Put your music/video in Public and all is well.

I cant get it to work even if the files are in the public folder. So just to be sure, you mean the folder that is located in c:\Users\Public? Cause it wont work with me. And there already was a sample video in there, and even that couldt play. I see the file, but i get a message saying it cant find the file. Im using W7 if it helps =)

Oh ok...

try the following steps under Win 7 Kevven;

1) Open Windows Media Player

2) Click the 'view full screen button' (normally bottom right) OR click 'Go to library' to make Windows Media Player turn into its library view.

3) Click the 'Stream' option.

4) Choose 'Automatically allow devices to play my media'

5) Done.

If you want you can also set up more streaming options (name of your DLNA network etc.) and even allow you to share your library over the net from your computer to another PC. Which seems to require a Windows Live Login.

Fun stuff. hope it works.

@mrdelgibbons, make sure you have setup your network with the "Home" profile, its easier this way, automatically configures firewall to allow sharing various media. Also try disabling and enabling streaming.

Try PS3 Media Server program in Windows. I currently use it for my PS3 and my Samsung TV. It's a DLNA media server app but with transcoding on the fly support. It should allow even full HD videos on the N900 via transcoding on the fly. (even resize to non-HD) I haven't tried yet but I sure will when I get my N900.
