It tells you if you have new messages without looking into dashboard. Your decision if you find it useful, personally I have it on my desktop and find it a nice addition.
Anyway, try it yourself. I wouldn't expect it to lock your n900 since it has gotten past testing.
didnt find a better thread to ask this, but I just installed and removed this widget, and during uninstallation it downloaded 4.something MB, then proceeded with uninstall.
when I tried to save a log, it froze up and I had to reboot.

it might be a bug that installs a random app when messing around with app manager.
Are you talking about "Conversations Inbox Desktop Widget" from Artem Garmash? I am using version 1.1.1 and work flawlessly for me -- it shows number of SMS and IM messages and also preview last message. Typing on widget start conversations.
