sudo gainroot should work too...
It might be that something has happened to your sudoers file.
Possibly try uninstalling and re-installing, or if you're happy just using 'root' then feel free to just use that.

I've enabled root access to check out some things, but as it has been more than 6 years since I've used linux extensively, I wish to disable it.
Uninstalling the rootsh did not suceed. Any suggestions on how to disable root access?

I had to type "sudo gainroot" again to install using dpkg -i *.deb
It asked me for a password if I used sudo dpkg -i *.deb
