why can't it just merge the audio streams again, i simply cannot be arsed to maintain a parallel video archive for my n900, nor should i need to be.

Both of these codecs are said to work above... Anyone know what the problem might be?
AC3 was confirmed to run out of the Box (can't confirme self as I don't have the device yet). Some post above your's it was said that the N900 can.t handle 5.1 and as i see in your codec description ist 6channles.... I would reencode it to simple stereo...

What's the best format to use? Video codec, audio codec, resolution, bitrate, fps? Best for battery life? Performance?

Nope, it doesn't. Maybe with extra codecs but not out of the box with firmware 42-11 installed.

ffvorbis (one of the Ogg Vorbis decoders) and the stock mpg audio decoder are about neck-and-neck for battery life. Can't say about any video codecs.

Actually, wav can also contain many different formats, some of which are compatible with almost every device, some which are not widely implemented.

the N900 is not supporting wav files even when in specs. nokia is aware of the wav file problem happening but hasn't it made it clear to buyers-here's its nokia n900 recommendation for wav file-no joke /wacktrap (desktop)

IT'S WACKTRAP. IT IS CLUELESS AND WRONG.

Wavs work fine in emails just as they do in the media player. Nothing to see here, just people who do not understand what 'wav' is. Move along.
