There are a few threads here about not getting wifi to work with some access points -- I've been a part of a few of those conversations.

What I'm wondering, though, is why I can't get my N800 to work with some known working wifi access points?

At work, we have open wifi throughout the building... This is how most people with laptops connect to the internet while their here. I can easily connect with my laptop without issue.

My N800 sees the access point just fine (with full bars) and can connect to it... But, when I try to do anything that connects to the internet, it won't work and tells me there is an error with the network.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks,
Tim

when you use the laptop, do you do anything special? Log onto a browser page or something?

Nope... The laptop sees the access point, I select it, and I'm on.

I did just find out that laptops are setup to use LEAP authentication, though... Does anyone know if this would work off of an Active Domain identity? If so, maybe that's my problem. If not, is there a way to set the N800 to use LEAP?

Tim

(A lesson to us all.)

But, has anyone found anything else out about this?

I have a similar problem at my university. If you have the same problem, then I know it's not you, it's the network. I have found through trial and error that there are places on campus where I can connect with Wifi.

P.S. Do any of the PDA users at your work have trouble with the network?

Nope. BuT, then, Palm & Windows Mobile devices have LEAP capability!

the only problem I sometimes get is the N800 says, "link local ip" and doesn't assign me my DNS correctly as my broadband is connected via DHCP.

Has anyone used thoughs Wifi sniffers on the n800, haven't tried them out yet..

If it says 'connected to local IP' and with a question mark over the icon, it means it couldn't get an IP address from the DHCP server. I've seen it happen now and then on otherwise ok networks, in particular when there are a lot of bridged APs (that is, a repeater chain). Sometimes it'll work by retrying.
