While trying to get matroska files work on n900 i used

apt-get install gstreamer-tools

command as root, phone said it already has latest version and gstreamer-tools set to manually installed.

it didn;t sound good to me. would this creat a problem? how can i reset it to automatically installed?

Use aptitude, find the gstreamer-tools and press the M key to change it to appear as an automatic installation.

https://garage.maemo.org/projects/aptitude/ doesn't seem to have Fremantle package

setting that to manually installed isn't going to hurt anything. All it does, is if whatever package was added that added it to begin with gets removed - it won't see itself as "orphaned" and possibly remove it with it.. because it thinks you specifically want *that* package, not as part of a dependency.
