what is the trick to get it work?
I followed install instruction from http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/
with blue and redpill mode.
and tried install direct from debs, but every time same answer,
"unable to install gaim"
edit: I removed old 1.5 gaim and removed even /home/user/.gaim dir before trying to install new one.
I encountered the same problem, then I have uninstalled Gaim-data, then I was able to install the gaim 2.0.
Then, find the terminal in "Extras", run it, and type
sudo gainroot
apt-get install gaim
This is basically what application manager does behind the scenes. Unlike with application manager, however, you should receive a message that tells you what's actually failing. You could post that message here, or it may even be helpful enough for you to figure out how to get gaim installed.

my bad there was maemo-gaim-data installed :-)
so much maemo* programs...
so removing maemo-gaim-data it installed even from app.manager !
I have a question: why go thru all the headaches of getting 2.0 to work when 1.5 works fine. Any advantages?
Actually it is not real headache to get it to work and I no where near the level of expertise as many here. At first I could not get it to work but I realized that I had installed a file that appears not to be needed. Once I uninstalled that and reinstalled everything it works fine. In terms of better, it seems smoother (if that makes sense), and more responsive. I rate it over the other version and the guy working on it promises to make it better so I would take the plunge and get it. But as I have been told I am technically challenged so what would I know

Actually, I'm wondering the same thing. I run GAIM 1.5 on my desktop(s) as well as on the N800 without any problems whatsoever, so I genuinely don't know what the advantages to the upgrade are.
2.0 Seems to be a bit better, a few more options, though today it seems to be crashing alot, getting the stopped responding window error and I do miss the Chat Icon though rather then the tapping the friend name to open the chat window, tapping (double tap) doesn't always open the chat window, I also miss the full screen mode as well. A special thanks to Tabster for the code to open the browser from a link/URL within Gaim.
please help instal problem. I went to the browser because I couldn't get the instructions at http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/ to work. I installed the http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/gaim-dist/ 4.3 meg file. I then tried to install the
gaim-protocol-msn_2... file and it said that needed files were not installed. I thought it was due to http://maemo-hackers.org/apt/ and at this location I am not sure what needs to be installed. Can someone please post how I can complete the gaim 2 install. Thanks.
DId you try to install via the Aplication Manager? This is how I did it and it worked okay.
Make sure you type everything correctly.
Go into Application Manager and put in the new repositories and it should ask for a refresh. Once it does, just choose GAIM 2.0 and the protocols that you need and you will be in no time. Hope this helps.
