Just as a point of reference, with my N95 and the U.S. firmware, I could not silence the shutter sound. With the Euro firmware (after changing the product code and reflashing) I *could* silence the shutter noise.

The same goes for my wife's N86 NAM. I can't shut up the shutter. In silent mode or not it'll make the click.

OK, I created a wave file PCM 24 bit 16k mono (but I did it on my PC with an open mic).... turned out to be noisy but I replaced the files /usr/share/sounds/camera_snd_title_x.wav (x being a 1,2 & 3) with my file - named the same - and those were the files that played.... alas, at full volume. I am going to make some nice quiet sound files that are clean and crisp, perhaps in different volumes, and post them for use... but don't know when I will get to it, though. Sorry for the giant run-on sentence here... Oh, and you must be root to do this.

I'd love to replace it with Phil from Pantera screaming SMILE!!! Heck even better....Perhaps Devin Townsend.
    Kinda be funny....

excellent information guys. I dont mind having my camera make noise when i take pics I just want it to be a little less loud. Edited the sound files using audacity, saved the original files (never know but i might need them), and then replaced originals with my modified version. Camera works like a charm and the sound is much less annoying now

Well that and it's not like you could hide the N900 anyway.

But anyway, now anyone want to do custom camera sounds in addition to custom ringtones?

FWIW I just renamed the _1 sound file, and it's nice and quiet now.
