Does anyone else find it really annoying that the N900 keyboard doesn't automatically insert punctuation for common contractions or capitalize things like the letter "I"? Overall I really like the feel of the keyboard but this missing feature really slows down my typing.

The keyboard functions similar to the regular keyboard. If you want your "I"s capitalized, you'd need to use the shift key.

I'm actually talking about the physical keyboard (haven't even used the virtual kb). I know how it works, it's just that most other devices I've used would auto capitalize "I"s and the first letter of common names, as well as add punctuation for words like isn't, wasn't, can't, etc. It's a very helpful feature that greatly improves typing speed.

Welcome to Linux We'll need text entry widgets that do that magic for us.

That automatic stuff is fine for sending SMS text messages, but for serious use it works better if the computer actually receives what you type.

It's a very harmful feature the greatly degrades typing speed when programming.

Clearly it ought to exist, and the user ought to be able to turn it off. Here's the thread -- called AutoText App -- and here's the AutoText Brainstorm.

It's a real gap in Maemo, IMO.

Yeah I can see how it would be harmful while programming, but there's no reason it couldn't be an option. I think it's usually a user selectable option on most phones anyway. Either that or it could be integrated so that it's only active for SMS/IM/email etc.

Yes kind of annoying but I think what is more annoying is not being able to choose a suggested word like you can when doing T9 texting. You just have to hope the word the device suggests is the one you want to type but very often is not.
