Getting mixed results when reading a mail in my browser on my PC. Sometimes it marks it as read on the N900, sometimes it doesn't.

Not the end of the world, but can get a bit annoying sometimes.

Yeah I have the same problem with reading gmail on my computer. Sometimes it takes a couple hours for it to be marked read on the N900 and sometimes it never shows as read.

The login there is the gmail or hotmail etc address and password that you used when setting up NM.

In addition to this, I haven't yet managed to archive my emails (on the gmail server) through Nokia messaging, haven't found an option for that either, even though I have selected All Mail on the Nokia Messaging website.

    Any tips?
sounds like you want a pop mail account. you need to change your gmail account to pop rather than imap and ten give it a try.

I got an SMS from NM for the download link.
I clicked on the link, then it takes me to:

Choose a platform from the list below that best matches your device type
I selected Symbian Series 60 5.0 ( Its not showing me Maemo platform option)

Then when i download it to the device. I am not able to open it.

When I the downloaded file, it says:
Select an application form the list to open file 'Nokia'

How to go ahead from here?
ignore the link, NM is already on your device. select other service providers and you should see NM listed in the setup

In relation to the standard Gmail account- as I typically check my mail with Apple Mail, messages are not marked as read when I check the account in my browser- the n900 mail app attempted (and actually managed after about an hour!) to tell me I had 13k+ new messages. However, every time I tried to open an email, the mail app would freeze- I assumed it was trying to download all those messages (but prayed to god that it was not!). So I deleted the account (on the n900) then marked all unread emails as read (using Gmail browser interface) and tried setting up on the n900 again- this time it correctly reported no new email messages--- but the same problem- every time I try to open an email- the app freezes. I can't seem to find any settings that would manage new mail retrieval... anyone else?

(With the hosted Gmail account, I can access no problem, but cannot send email)
if you are using IMAP yep there is a bug with large mailboxes that causes Modest to go away for a long time. use Nokia messaging to get your gmails pushed to you.

Okay for Gmail here are the complete settings:
    Open wizard:
    Region: USA or other
    Service Provider: Other
    Account Title: "your choosing"

    Next

Name: "Name you want to appear on emails"
    Username: "Your email username"
    Password: "Your email password"
    E-mail address: "Your email"

    Next

    Account Type: IMAP4
    Incoming server: imap.gmail.com
    Secure Authentication: "leave unchecked"
    Secure Connection: SSL (IMAP4S)

    Next

    Outgoing server: smtp.gmail.com
    Secure authentication: Login
    Secure Connection: SSL

    Next and finish.

Go to your email account now and it'll update and it should work. Hope it helps.
