I think the speed you see with Cingular's 3G network depends on your location. I live in the San Francisco area and I get ~900kbps down / and ~350kbps up when I have full bars. My N800 seems to surf just as fast as if I was at home using my WRT54G router and 10Mbps cable modem. And when I'm out of 3G coverage EDGE is reasonably fast for surfing in a pinch (100-150kbps). For $20/month plus voice plan I am completely satisfied with the service Cingular is giving me. Your mileage may vary though.

On the N800 side, you need to edit /etc/ppp/options to force PAP by disabling CHAP and CHAPv2, by adding the
refuse-chap
refuse-mschap
refuse-mschap-v2
Hey thanks for your report on the Verizon phones. I have a question for you, though. Did you actually add the "refuse-chap", etc lines to the /etc/ppp/options.txt file? Or did you just uncomment the lines?

I only see "+PAP" and "-CHAP" in my options file. (those are the lines that I uncommented). Do I need to add the lines that you mentioned?

Just some food for thought. I was at a sprint store yesterday and I tried to tether the n800 with all of the phones they had on display and out of all the phones they had only 2 would tether with the n800 and give me internet access..

They are the moto krzr k1m and the sanyo scp-8400

I am surprised that their higher end PDA phones will not tether. Its kind of a bummer because I would like to have some PDA functionality in my phone.. Oh well.

My N800 works with my Cingular 8525, and my daughter's Alltel RAZR.

It was strange with the 8525. I couldn't get it to tether with just Bluetooth conenctions at first. I could pair the devices, but no tethering. Then I found someones documentation about a program called Wireless Modem under Start-Programs. I ran that, told it a Bluetooth connection, and was able to use the modem.
The NEXT time I tried to tether, I forgot to start the Wireless Modem program, but it worked anyway, and has since. No Wireless Modem required.

I have a Verizon Motorola E815 on which I've enabled Bluetooth DUN (dial-up networking) and OBEX. My understanding is that VZW only officially supports tethering to the EV-DO network through USB (not Bluetooth), so this is perhaps not for everyone. I have the $15/mo VCast plan on my phone.

That having been said, it works very well with the N800. I recently drove about 55 miles with Maemo Mapper automatically downloading hybrid (satellite+map) image tiles the whole way. On the way back, I had Rhapsody streaming music pretty much the whole way with only one disconnection.

Hi Pa28pilot,
Can you please give a little more detail about how you enabled Bluetooth DUN (dial-up networking) and OBEX? This sounds like a good option for me if it's not too over my head technically.
Thanks in advance.

for all those who are signed with cingular + media max plan using 3g service, are you still tethering? ive read that a person downloaded a 1 meg file and got charged for it. id like to tether to 3g, and i am very unclear about my options in terms of service. can a 3g phone + media max enable me to surf at 3g speeds on the n800 or must i purchase the data plan + pda to tether. it seems like 80% of the forum is using a 3g phone tethering using a media max plan.

Quickly enter ##DIALUP (or, ##342587) at the phone's main screen.
A "Changed: Dial-Up Networking Enabled" prompt should display to confirm the change of settings.
very easy...

Both the Blackberry 8800 and the HTC 8525 are known to work. I have used both. (on Cingular/AT&T)

I successfully tethered a Sprint PPC6700 phone to the n800 through bluetooth. Took me quite a while to finally get it to hook up and work properly and I probably could not document all the steps accurately but this combination does work.
