    according to the following website

    http://picodrive.acornarcade.com/

picodrive was originally "written entirely in ARM assembly at its core". I only mention this because I'm a big fan of not doing work someone else has already done. Unfortunately I dont see a link to the source code on that webpage but I'm sure its out there somewhere.

edit: http://picodrive.acornarcade.com/pic.../download.html has links to multiple versions of the source code. Granted this version is written for the RiscOS but as the core is still in arm assembly i think this code could be useful.

There are a few old posts that seem like at least a little work went into getting picodrive on the older tablets. I would LOVE to see this ported. Played with picodrive on a PSP yesterday it worked great.

Picodrive was never released for the older tablets. I know, I've been wanting it on the Maemo platform for a loooong time.

Perhaps you're getting it confused with the awesome S60 port of PicoDrive?

Wow is that true? Because it sure ain't running full speed on my N900.

I get around 20fps playing Donkey Kong Country with the sound being a little "off" (the N900 seems prone to sound falling behind, looping, stuttering with any high CPU usage) and that oddly seems to run better than simpler games.

You are right though, I can't imagine the Genesis being a problem. Surely its not the CPU core holding it back, last I read there are many different emulation cores for the 68000 and not all will be x86 assembler.

    Here's the post:

So it probably isn't much, but if ArnimS still has that source it's at least a starting point for someone to pick up the project.

Why don't you install the scratchbox sdk, download a Genesis emulator, and try compiling it?

[edit] it's *fun* to make stuff run on the tablet/phone! It is more fun than playing games!
[edit2] maybe picodrive isn't a good project to start out with.

Some easier things to compile, that just need a *little* lovin are:

    * Penguin Command - Missile Command Clone (needs some changes to variables to make it fit right in 800x480)
    * KoboDeluxe - awesome game - just needs modification to cache the generated sound files - and remapping some keys
    * Tecnoballz - Really nice arkanoid clone
    * Xu4 - Ultima 4 clone - needs some work to make it run on n800, n770 without keyboard. Also would be nice to get a bundled timidity for the music.

I will help anyone interested in getting started!

Thanks for the offer ArnimS! I may take you up on that one day. I actually partially justified getting my n900 with interest in programming. Unfortunately I am still without a computer until I get my HD replacement.

On a semi related note, I am sitting here in front of a real genesis/segacd, lol. So I can get my fix until someone ports this, or I become skilled enough to do it myself.

On my old Sony Ericsson M600 smartphone with ARM9 200Mhz CPU Picodrive work very fast its 30-60fps with sound and 50-60fps without sound.
