I just got a new 16GB microSD card and I'm wondering what are the advantages or having multiple partitions and whether I should format them ext3 instead of FAT32?
The intended uses for the external card are obviously storage (music, videos, text files), but I would also like to install applications like easy-debian (when it gets to extras) and such.

I currently transfer files to and from the tablet via sshfs over wifi.

Please I need some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I have my microSD formatted as EXT3 for my debian chroot.

But I think the best approach is to partition it into a fat32 (first) and a ext3 partition.

This avoids warnings from Maemo and things like "Memory Card Corrupt" (it assumes fat32)

Also, this will give you extra space accessible via USB, and I think a fat32 portion of the microSD card would allow for setting up a persistant Ubuntu USB boot image or similar, that would enable you to boot up a decent OS on any x86 box you encounter with USB boot support.

I haven't tried the fat32/ext3 dual partition route myself, but likely will soon

Various formatting options are discussed in http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=36913
