Works for me: when starting Ovi Maps a dialog appears offering a connection to choose. Sorry for the stupid question but are you sure you pressed "Save" after selecting "Always ask"?

Hi , I have been having problems getting my GPS to work at all without an internet connection but i never fully tested it out. So on a 6 hour drive from munich to madgeburg i played around it abit and found that the gps was infact great.

So what happend, basically i started out by opening Ovi Maps as usual and waiting for a gps lock but after 10 or 15 minutes no luck (tried while driving and while parked).

So i thought not working, great Ill just plot the route anyway, about 3 minutes after I plotted a route I got a lock with fine accuracy. I was locked the whole way there for 3 hours, sometimes iŽd switch ovi maps off and to get it to lock on again I would have to insert a new route and wait around 2 minutes.

So it looks like its a problem with ovi maps more than the gps.

I'm finding that it is often necessary to reboot the N900 to get things working. I just did a small test of this. GPSJinni is a great tool for viewing the satellites while you're testing Ovi Maps. With the N900 having been on all night. the GPS would not get a lock even after 20 or 30 minutes, which is clearly wrong. Walk outside, still no lock after another 30 or 40 seconds. GPSJinni is showing only 1 strong satellite and several at only 15% and none of them are locked (i.e. showing an "X").

Still outside, reboot the N900. It gets a lock in a very short time (<10 seconds?). GPSJinni shows 8 or 9 satellites and 3 locks. Ovi Maps shows the "red" dot and as I walk, it correctly follows my position. This is without network assistance.

While still locked, I came back indoors (residential house). GPSJinni still showing at times 9 satellites, half are very strong with 4 locks. Ovi Maps continues to show correct position of "red" dot.

I have had this experience with the GPS radio before and with the WLAN radio. After the N900 has been in use doing various things for some time, it can't get a GPS lock or get & keep a WiFi connection. But after a reboot, all is back to normal.

i can confirm having the same trouble as described in this thread - no lock whatsoever without agps, inside, outside, tested many times for 30 min or more. satellites are visible as shown by the "gpstest" app, but gps just can't lock in.

i spoke with nokia support in norway today, they confirmed that they are very much aware of this at nokia hq. he mentioned it possibly would be fixed with a future firmware update, but i strongly doubt he had any in depth knowlede as to whether it would come with the first fw update or later on.

seen as the gps feature is fairly important for me, i returned my n900 - we'll see what they do - try to brush me off by trying to "fix" it or ship a brand new device. i fear that even if they do provide me with a new one, there's a good chance it will alsa be affected.

3 minutes is still too long a time to wait for a satellite lock. The next time you are having trouble getting a satellite lock (which should at most take 1 or 2 minutes even without aGPS network assistance), try powering off/on and see if you don't get a lock within a very short time. If so, then I think it is a problem with the hardware not Ovi Maps.

the first thing i was asked today during my conversation with nokia support (see my previous post), was for how long i tried to get a lock. i said upto 45 min and the guy replies: "ahhh, ok, bacause it can take upto 15 minutes you know".

That's BS of course!

Maybe I'm spoiled, but I have been using a handheld Garmin GPSmap 76CSx for several years for travelling, geocaching, finding nearby businessess, even just predicting time of arrival at friends. The Garmin gets a lock in <30 seconds most of the time and it is unusual if it takes more than 2 minutes to get a lock. The worst scenario is in a forest after a rainfall--wet leaves tend to soak up microwave energy preventing a good lock.

Furthermore, the Garmin has no network assistance and requires no Internet connection to download maps. Having to incrementally download maps is a completely ludicrous notion when you're speeding down a freeway looking for the next exit that has gas! It is intended only to provide more revenue for the carriers, but it is completely impractical for the user.

Anyway, back to the N900... I think the "30 second time out" theory mentioned a few posts back is probably accurate. I have noticed with GPSJinni that there are plenty of available good satellite signals but Ovi Maps just doesn't want to lock on them.

Is the lack of a digital compass a big drawback??

BTW l'm a noob when it comes to phone based gps solutions, so does it cost anything to use the gps?? (ie does it use over-gsm/gprs/3g etc data traffic?)

How long does it take to get a coarse lock? You can even try indoors.

If you are outside, how much extra time is needed to get a fine accurate lock? Check the location status area plugin if you can't see it clearly with Ovi Maps.

Report results here or, even better, at https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7026

Thank you!
If you want to help these guys to trace down the problem, the location-test-gui application. It's available at
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/mae...+0m5_armel.deb

Quick install guide:
1. Download the the package file (.deb) into your PC
2. Transfer the file to N900 MyDocs-folder
3. Install rootsh application to N900 with application manager
4. Open X-terminal and change to MyDocs directory ("cd MyDocs")
5. Give command "sudo gainroot". If the command executes ok, the promt will change to "#". BE CAREFUL NOW, you have full rights do to anything..like brick your device
6. type "dpkg -i loc" and hit the "Tab" button in screen
7. The command should now expand to "full" ("dpkg -i location-test-gui/location-test-gui_0.92-1+0m5_armel.deb". Hit Enter to begin the installation.
If things went well, you should see few "reading..unpacking..setting up.. lines.
8. If all went well, close x-terminal and return to desktop and add link to application (listed as "Location Test" with radar icon)

The appilcation lists detailed satellite etc. information in text format that can be copied and pasted to comments in the bug report
